registration woes with new truck

I found a Ram 5500 cab and chassis out of state and took delivery via a transport company a couple weeks ago. I had financed the loan through our local credit union, researched insurance (higher GVW) and our agent was able to assign us a policy, no problem.
The state of CA will not register an incomplete truck (found out yesterday at DMV) which means there isn't a title and the credit union is not listed as lienholder. I then went to the credit union and I seem to be the first to navigate these waters for them. As of now, they have a non-collateralized loan and are deciding how to proceed.
I have an estimate in hand to have the truck body built with an estimated 12 week delivery. The credit union has copies of everything including new insurance with the combined value of new truck cab and aftermarket body even though it's not completed or installed.
Anybody experience this before? I could probably buy out the loan with the Passat buy-back and sale of truck but I'm thinking of keeping the truck for a couple more months.

  • It doesn't matter if you are doing commercial hauling or not. All 2 series and up trucks in CA are licensed by weight and you get CA commercial plates with the attendant much higher registration fees. CA has gotten way out of control trying to support their habit by taxing anything to do with business including any motor vehicle that remotely smells like business. The only upside i can see with this is the ability to park in the occasional yellow loading zone.
I"m with JM. See if you can get an extension on the registration deadline. There might be a penalty.
Now-o-days our camper stays on the truck most of the time. If it were ALL the time I could petition the DMV for RV status and the reg. fees would drop dramatically. It's just that small portion of the time I use the truck only that keeps me from doing it. I don't want to get caught. So, how much of the time are you contemplating having the camper on? If you want to live dangerously, register the thing as an RV once you get an extension and the new bed and camper on the truck. I don't know if there is an inspection for this. If there is, remove the jacks before hand.
There is some navigational way around all this.

  • The final part of the builders sheet is re-certification of weight ($20.00) to have numbers for registration. Meanwhile I overheard the branch manager suggest converting the loan to a non collateralized personal loan. Ouch...
  • It's going to have a contractor's set of boxes with a bed all built to accommodate my camper. No commercial hauling etc. Douglass Truck Bodies have become known for tailoring bodies for heavier campers and actually has a build sheet. I have a 2X4 with mud flaps and a temporary plaque from Indiana due to expire Jan 1st.
  • You might have two possible options. The first ask DMV for some sort of temporary documentation/registration as you are in the process of getting the truck bed completed with the understanding that you will get the truck permanently registered in twelve weeks. Or, ask the truck aftermarket bed manufacturer/outfitter to find a temporary bed to put on the truck long enough to get it registered while the final permanent bed is being made.
  • Something doesn't sound right here. I question the state having to approve a bed on the truck. If you were to bolt a couple of 2"x4"s on the frame with plywood on top, it would be a flatbed. You probably would have to install mud flaps, but they to could be wood.

What is your intended end use on the Ram 5500 cab and chassis?

  • Yah, well I got a Cab-Chassis RAM 5500 from Idaho, registered in SD.. It's an "Incomplete Truck" too.. as I suppose they all are since nothing is on the chassis..
The local credit union, BECU Boeing in Seattle, WA, wouldn't touch it, only 3500s and below.

Insurance and Reg was a bit tricky, but the mail Drop peeps were able to guide me and get'er registered...

Tags still showing Incomplete Truck on the door tags, didn't need an inspections that I'm aware of. Maybe i do, just don't know... and letting "Sleeping Dogs Lie" for now...
Good luck, it's not a piece o cake...
  • You mean to tell us that a C&C according to CA is not a complete vehicle? I guess I can expect that sort of rubbish out of that place. But really now? I guess I would have to ask them how they license class 6,7,8 trucks then.
  • According to this info it CAN be registered......

    Must be registered 'commercial'
Must have a STATEMENT that NO BODY will be attached and indicate WHAT cab/chassis will be used for

    MAYBE??
