- GrandpaKipExplorer IIWhy take the chance? Supporting the awning ends should only take a couple of minutes.
- Colo_NativeExplorerI just replaced one of the brackets in mine and if you open the awning and support it (I use bungees tied to a 12" ladder) take all the pressure of the strut (shock)

While you are not giving much info on awning type/brand, I would support my Dometic electric awning before removing the shock. If I pull down to lower the awning end, it seems the shock is doing a lot of supporting. I have to say, that I have never replaced one though.

X2- Need more info.
Mine (Lippert) are rated at 124 lbs. You need to support the end. - MFLNomad II
