RV Propane outside quick connect

I have a new to me 2007 Nash 27E that has a propane quick connect on the front outside of the trailer. I have not owned a trailer with one of these before and the manuals that came with the trailer (used) do not talk about the quick connect.

It looks fairly simple and I have used propane quick connects before. I bought a quick connect cable on Amazon with a 3/4" flare fitting to connect to my Camp Chef stove.

Camp Chef makes an "official" one here, which I would have gladly purchased even at the cost if it was in stock anywhere, but it wasn't.

So I did a little research on the sizes and purchased what seemed like an equivalent hose with the same sized fittings:

The Flame King hose hooks into the quick connect port with no problems, it even screws onto my Camp Chef stove tightly.

The problem is when I hook the Camp Chef stove up with this hose and turn the gas on at the quick connect. Gas appears to come out from EVERYWHERE on the stove, which is quite scary. It comes out rapidly if the stove gas burners are turned on, off or anywhere in between. It's like there is a leak everywhere on the stove. I checked the tightness of the connector and it is as tight as it will go.

I tested the stove with the included regulator and hose with a 20lb propane tank and it works fine.

It is as if the quick connect fitting on my travel trailer still has high pressure propane in it.

Anyone have any ideas? I have not seen a quick connect fitting that still has a regulator on it, so I am kind of stumped.
  • Have you tested the stove with just a small, screw-in propane bottle (ala Wal-Mart or CW) just to rule out problems with the stove?

The second thought is where is the pressure regulator located? There should only be one in the connection from the tank(s) manifold to the stove itself. Sounds like it might be over-pressuring your stove.
  • I'd bet your quick connect is plumbed in before the two stage regulator. If you don't have a regulator on the hose from your quick connect to the stove, you will flare mightily.

The solution is to have a regulator at the stove end. This way, if you use other propane appliances that require full delivery to their own regulator, you will be all set. If you plumb the quick connect after the two stage regulator of your propane plumbing and have an additional regulator on the appliance (camp stove), you will only get a small flame, at best.
  • I agree with westend on this. You might try getting a barbeque pressure regulator to put between the quick connect and the grill. If you adapt that to a quick connect as well you can remove it as needed.
  • You said that you tested the grill with the included regulator and a 20# tank and that it worked fine. Have you tested the grill with the included regulator and the camper outlet propane? If the outlet propane is fed direct from the camper bottle and not through a regulator then the grill should work fine with the included regulator.

On my trailer the outlet is low pressure so I don't use the included regulator with my grill. I do use the regulator if I put the grill over on a picnic table and use a 1# propane bottle.

As someone mentioned you don't want 2 regulators in series feeding the grill.

  • I checked when I got home. The quick connect looks like an aftermarket install. It is before the pressure regulator on the main tanks. I will need a regulator on the quick connect. Thanks!
  • Yes, a regulator between the quick connect and the stove will work fine. Can you re-pipe your camper outlet to "T" into the line that feeds your appliances? What ever you do be super careful around propane and check for leaks when you are through.
