Seeking advice on towing to Show Low, AZ, from Tucson

I am wondering if anyone has towed anything with weight up to Show Low from Tucson and can comment on the two possible routes.

One is staying on 77 up to Globe and the other is taking 177 over to the 60 and then up to Globe. It appears there is a rather steep section on 77 that gains about 2700 feet in about eight miles; not horribly steep, maybe, but I am willing to drive farther on the 177 if it is significantly less steep.

Ford F350, 4wd, 7.3 PSD, Lance 1030, towing a Wrangler Unlimited.

  • Thanks, Cewillis, for the encouraging word on the 77. I will take it. It's the shortest route, too.
  • There's no big problem along 77, with the Gila River or anything else. 79 is flatter, though.
But there's no good way to avoid the Salt River canyon -- unless you go all the way north to Flagstaff, across 40 and back south at Holbrook.
  • It's the downhill I am most worried about. I have installed a Ready-Brake system for the first time and I am worried about how (or if) the Jeep brakes will ever disengage on a downhill. It's even got me thinking of taking the 79 to where it joins the 60 and then going up. That would avoid that drop into the Gila River drainage on 77. Is that a very steep downhill?

I guess I will just pull over if they start to smoke, release the tension on the cable and let them cool.
  • The Salt River Canyon is fairly steep on both sides, with a few hairpin turns. But if you can manage the turns, and have good brakes, shouldn't be a problem.

I would take 77, you will have as much of a tug on 60, both before Globe and after once you hit the Salt River Canyon. No worries, you have a more than capable vehicle for any of them.

  • Whichever way to want........

That F350 with the 7.3 PSD won't have any problems with grades......unless your truck has issues already
