Short Question - Short Answer for Lance Camper Folks

Hi,

By 2007 would a Lance 861 have been aluminum framed? It seems like an 855S with a basement, if I'm not mistaken. Yes, I know it's a good bit heavier but a short bed one ton should haul it.

Thanks,

Bill

  • That's pretty universal among truck camper manufacturers. They tend to advertise the camper for one class truck lower than it really should be loaded on.

If you follow the truck camper manufacturer's recommendations most of the time you will be at least 500lbs overloaded, up to as much as 1500lbs overloaded once the "real world" sets in.

Just like the truck manufacturers with their tow ratings, camper manufacturers are working off the best case scenario. Sure the bare empty dry camper might be within the truck's payload rating, if you just load it and park it, but you don't camp naked and hungry in the RV dealer lot!
  • Thanks. I'm shopping for one tons. It seems to me that Lance wanted to broaden their market and knew single rear wheel, short bed, diesels were rare, when the 861 was introduced. Thus it was marketed as "3/4 ton capable."

I'll be using my truck as my daily driver and live in the crowded east. Thus a short bed truck is the way, for me at least, to go.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

    mkasner,

So at 4,000# I really should use a 1 ton truck. Lance says it's 3/4 haulable but maybe they are being a bit generous.

    Thanks,

Not all 861's are created equal, we have every option except for solar. Not all 861's came with generator, awnings...etc. which add up in weight. 3/4 ton lots of guys do it no problems, 1 ton with ANY truck camper just makes life easier when you want to buy either a bigger or smaller camper. Don't buy your truck based on MINIMUMS, always go bigger 3500 or even 4500

  • Yes ALL 861s have aluminum frames walls, which is one of the reasons why we have the ability to have such large tanks (weight wise) our loaded 861 weighs in at just around 4,000LBs wet
  • LanceLock is shown on pdf page 16 of the 2007 brochure. Don't feel bad, I missed it the first two times I looked through the brouchure and only because I knew it had to be in there did I take a slower look.
  • Yes, the 861 has an Aluminum Frame.
we loved our 06' 861 up until a Tow Truck ran into it.
    then we didn't.
  • Thanks pirlbeck and mkasner,

I'd opened the brochure but couldn't find anything about the frame just scanning it. It refers to aluminum floor, bed, and ceiling but nothing about walls. Did LanceLock come along later?

On edit: I found more information on LanceLock in the 2006 brochure.

I'm moving toward three or so 861's I've found on RVTrader. It looks like a really nice camper for its age and the tanks are huge for a short bed camper.

    Thanks,

    Bill
  • Yup, I have a 2008 and the 2007 861 was the latest model after the 881 max was replaced with the 861! We love the 861 and don't let the 855s sway you into thinking they are the same, as they are not
