Sleep under a camper shell instead of truck camper?

I am exploring ideas. I'm not totally discounting possibility of buying a truck camper (or something else), but my main need is for a place to sleep from time to time when on the road. I have 2008 Nissan Titan 4-door crew cab and me being 6'2" tall, it's a bit cramped sleeping in the crew cab. I have a styrofoam mattress I use and it works fine with a pillow and blanket but I feel cramped.

So, I could get a truck camper, just not sure about that on this half-ton truck. Or any truck. I've never been in one, don't know anything about them, don't know how easy they are to get on/off, don't know how cramped, overall, I would feel in a truck camper. Might be fine and dandy. And perhaps more practical for me than towing a trailer.

In lieu of that, what about just a camper shell? I might even get a new truck. I think Nissan is coming out with a Cummins diesel Titan for 2016. But on the camper shell idea... are there any that are truly waterproof and are there any that I could insulate somehow? Is there a way to open the rear window in my truck, leave the engine running and use the ac/heat for comfort back to the camper shell or do you think that is impossible to cool/heat back there? Actually, in the winter, I could just rely on a sleeping bag. In summers, it gets real hot and a/c would be nice or even a necessity.

Of course, it would be best to have a truck camper... a decent bed, plus toilet/shower/stove. But...

Sure would like to hear some feedback from you experienced people.

  • When we first got married that's all we had to camp in. I built two cabinets a little higher than the fenderwell along each side of the pickup bed. These were used for storage of camping gear. I setup with a one inch piece of plywood that we would slide over the opening between the two cabinets. This made up a sleeping platform and we used a large air mattress plus sleeping bags.

Ice chest, coleman stove and lantern plus cooking and eating gear and we were set to go wherever we wanted.

We did this for a couple of years until we bought an old chassis mounted camper from my dad.
  • before my camper I built a bunk in the back under the shell. Slept many nights on the beach. Sleeping bag and air mattress if I was going up scale.

I often think back on how easy it was then. Sure the camper is more comfortable, but sheesh seems like im always fixing something on the camper.
  • I used to sleep in under the shell in the back of my truck all the time. I had a Ford Ranger with a 7ft bed and a color matching fiberglass snug top. The back window of the truck was a slider so you could pass through stuff to the cab. There was a full carpet kit in the back which worked really well, storage pods down the sides and enough room for 1 person to lay down in the middle. The middle sections could be lifted level with the storage pods so 2 people could sleep but then there was little headroom. I would take a small stove, camp chair, sleeping bag, cooler, and whatever else with me. At night, the gear went in the front seats and I went in the back. Did this for several years.
  • Look into a WilderNest topper, I had one for years before getting my first pop-up.:
