So much for Maxxis tires

Approximately three years ago I bought into the hype about Maxxis tires and purchased a set. The tires were made in 2012.
Upon pulling into a campground recently, I noticed a damaged tire, a section of tread was missing and steel belt exposed. The tire was fully inflated and I did not notice any difference in handling, there are about 15,000 miles on the tires and I drive 55 to 60 mph most of the time.
My wife noticed a popping sound about two hours before reaching our destination for the evening. Looking back it was probably the tire losing a portion of the tread. The best thing I can say about the tire is I was able to drive about 85 miles without it disintegrating and causing a lot of damage.
Since this event, I did a little research and found that trailer tires have a mileage expectancy of 12 to 15 thousand miles and should be replaced in three to five years.
I know there will be those that have had tires that exceeded these parameters, but my own experience in twenty years of towing seems to confirm these recommendations.

Don't feel bad.... your the 29th RV.net member who have had Maxxis ST8008 tire issues such as tread separation.

Years of service means nothing. Some members report 1500-1800 miles a year.
Then some may have 15k-18k miles in one year.

Now your fun begins searching for a tire that can run for 40k-50k miles and 7-10 years.....and stay together.

Only 29? That's amazing compared to the China bomb failures reported. It is also spectacular considering most people have a tendency to report Maxxis failures WAY MORE OFTEN than they would China bombs failures because they expect it from China bombs.

I just ordered 5 new Maxxis tires to replace the NEW tires on my 2015 TT and this statistic just assured me I made the right decision.

    Thanks!
  • I don't understand the title of this thread. I see the results of tire separations every time I drive on the highway from tractor trailers. As I found out personally, the amount of wear is not indicative of the health of an ST tire.

So maybe this time go with the LT crowd and see how that goes. Tire failures reported on this board are just a tiny fraction of what goes on in the rest of the world.
  • Well, ANY manufactured product can have a defect. Regardless of usual quality. And anything could have damaged it.

It's a sample of one. Now, if this was the third time it happened to you, I'd understand the "so much for" title. Any product can go bad or be damaged.

For the record, I've never had a Maxxis. I use Hercules. No issues so far. But that could be normal or luck. It's just a tire, not a miracle of engineering.

For what it's worth, I'll never run Lt tires on a trailer. They're not rated for the same payload etc. I'll stick to what it was designed to be used for. Just my opinion. Many have used Lt tires for years with no worries. Same with probably every other tire type and brand.

  • Funny since Maxxis warrants their tires for 5 years. I used one set of Maxxis more than 6 years and none have failed in less than 5 years. You have no way of knowing why the tire failed at this point and could easily have hit something on the road that caused the damage. I damaged a Maxxis tire one time on a busted concrete curb (totally my fault) and I drove it 160 miles without it losing air or degradating further. You can spend your money on any brand you like and good luck.
  • You can believe that 12-15 thousand miles if you want or the 3-5 years thing..I don't. Does that mean if i put 12,000 miles on my trailer in a year I need new tires? Even if my present tires are not showing much if any wear...I don't think so..

I believe that Discount says that an ST tire has lost 35-40% of it's strength in 3 years.

Get some LTs and be happy.
