- BedlamModeratorOnce you get to the chassis cab models, they detune the gasoline and diesel engines but they give you more axle ratio choices. I always wonder if the less aggressive tune was applied to a pickup, if it would get better mileage. Deactivating some of the cylinders only happens while in PTO use and not while driving in a chassis cab, so I don't think you could ever get a true comparison without too many variables.
I currently am pricing the Rams and Fords and also find Ford is more expensive. Ram is pushing some good rebates right now on existing stock which makes it hard to resist if you find one you like. Be aware that the base prices on Rams vary wildly. Not only do they change per production run, but also per dealer based on volume. The latter I found strange since Ford usually gives the dealer more under the table kick backs and keeps the MSRP's more consistent. - JumboJetExplorer

Historically they have lied big time!!!
But I don't know about forth gens.
Mine is a little conservative when I check it against actual fuel pumped vs. elapsed miles. Off about 2 tenths.
My oil change and tire rotation at 7,500 miles costs me $65 - 10 quarts of oil and filter - changed at the dealer. Fuel filter change cost me over $100 at 15,000 miles. - trail-explorerExplorerI also need to add:
Congrats to them on the new truck, and looking at everything and not just buying a particular brand "because that's what we had in the past"
When I was shopping several years ago, I looked at 'em all.
At the time, the GM was the best fit for me for more reasons than just the fact that "I've always owned a GM truck."
I know that with each new body change of GM, I hated them at first, but then they look better as time goes on. I can say the same about the grille on the '15 HDs - too many horizontal lines, it looks hideous. The GMC looks nice though.
BUT, at least GM and Dodge (ooops, I mean RAM) are making things new, unlike the blue oval that has had the same basic body since 1999.
extended OCI of a diesel makes up for the added cost....
DRW vs SRW..... we've debated that 100 times, but for a rig that doesn't see a lot of daily driving, and is used more as an RV hauler, there's little reason to skimp and get an SRW. - mooring_productExplorerOn my 2012 its very accurate. My old Ford was way off..
I'm diesel and not EPA friendly so my MPG numbers aren't what most will get.. - trail-explorerExplorer
- trail-explorerExplorerEvery rig I have driven, the MPG display varies a bit, but I can't say it would be a "big time lie"
When I say they "vary a bit" it's +/- .5 - 1.5 mpg per tank.
One think I noticed about the Dodge Dually I drove, and this is likely because I'm a GM 4x4 IFS driver is I felt every imperfection in the road through the front end - this was due to the solid axle.
Another oddity of the Dodge trucks (well, OK.... RAM trucks) - the tow / haul mode switch on the dash. it needs to be on the shift lever, where shifting functions should be, LOL.
That was the first thing I noticed when reading the TCM article.
I do like the color. It looks very much like Kerry's 3500HD DRW Silverado, which I think is called Blue Granite Metallic. - ScottGNomad

18 mpg empty would be great, especially pushing two more tires down the road. I wonder how accurate the Dodge mpg display is. :@ - dakonthemountaiExplorerWow! I SO want one! I would opt for the 2wd though. Oh, and since mine is paid for I guess I'll keep it for a while. I can dream though and I'm sure there WILL be a new truck in the future someday before I stop driving! :)
I had no idea this even existed!
Dak - billtexExplorer IIVery interesting. If the mpg numbers Angela and Gordon are reporting hold up over the long haul, that is a real challenge to diesel.
That is quite a nice truck, with significant payload.
A/G a job well done!
