I think it comes down to what you will use the truck for when not towing, and what you prefer. Also consider your weight requirements. I got by with short bed for a long time. Lost a rear window so went to a slider hitch, which I loved. 'realized the need for DRW so no I have a long bed and a Puck B&W. I can't believe the difference. The DRW handles like a dream, even parking and turning sharp. I also love the simplicity of the B&W hitch and how easy it hooks and unhooks. Also very easy to remove from bed if I need too. One other big plus is all the room I have in the bed for odds and ends when towing, that I did not have with a short bed. Just my thoughts.
You are right, it's what we prefer not what others think you need. Question, do you think if the next truck you buy has a 10' bed that you will be saying that you got by with a 8' bed? Probably. Sometimes it's a lot like a guys garage. A man can never have too much garage right or is it that it's easier to have more space than it is to have to organize?
You say you lost a back window in your short bed. Was it because it was a short bed or was it because you had a laps in concentration? Could you have gotten in the place you were trying to without breaking the window if you were paying closer attention?
See, some people prefer the simplicity of a short bed and know that they have to pay a little more attention when backing. Other will take the longer turning radius and take up more parking to not have the worry of paying attention. To me, this is just like telling someone that if they would not buy a travel trailer and get a 5er that they wouldn't have to pay attention to the bumper of the truck getting into the front of the camper.
There are pluses and minuses to everything. Some people think that 1 1/2 foot of bed is the difference between a truck and a grocery getter. I would rather have my 6.5' bed and add a rack to the back of the 5er. JMO
