Let's hope he had someone who could fix the truck and get him down the road more than 10 miles.

Also when I was filling up with Diesel at the Shell station off of I10 Christmas Eve I stood there and watched a guy with a 05 RAM Cummins in the parking lot spewing antifreeze on the drivers side like crazy with the engine running. As I left I pulled up to the guy with his engine still running :S and asked if he needed to arrange a tow to the RAM shop in the area. He wasn't a happy camper to say the least and nodded no. It's unfortunate when a failure happens on the road especially on Christmas Eve, but this guy just letting his engine run while coolant was spilling out will probably be replacing a head gasket in the near future. :S Just another reason I don't buy used vehicles. :W

The best advice was the guy that offered to move his 5vr and suggested where he could get a rental. That is what sort of helpful info I would be looking for if I broke down out of town.

As an alternative, a fellow might be able to buy a used truck locally, like a V-10, install the hitch, try to temporarily forget the ordeal, and then sell it for very near cost, or better, when vacation is over with.

Heck. He's in Texas; trucks are so common, they're cheaper there from what I've heard. :H

I see your point,but I will stay with the one brand that I have driven since '61 and never let me down on the road. From '88 thru '08 I put over 250k on two different vehicle brands(vans used for work) that were not the brands I have owned. One of those brands had more troubles than it should have had. Call it brand loyality if you want, but I am very happy with my choices.

While I do see your point, it can also be said that somebody has been burned by every car manufacturer that has ever existed.

Hope the OP is back on the road in something. Vacation time can be precious, don't blame him at all for just finding another truck rather than spending Christmas week in Houston waiting on someone to fix it right.

I would not have an issue buying another 6.7L PSD but based upon today's current offerings, the new Ram would be very high on the list and most likely the front runner if I were faced with purchasing a new 1 ton diesel.

I was lucky with my 6.0 when the EGR cooler started to leak:

1. The work was covered under warranty
2. The failure was small allowing me to continue driving
3. I was local and able to take it to a dealer that is versed in diesel repair

It's a tough call whether to replace your vehicle or fix it. If it has served you well up to this point and is capable of the tasks for which you use it, I would be tempted to fix it since even an infrequent expensive repair is less expensive than new vehicle financing. If you have had trouble with the truck before (dependability) or it no longer delivers what you ask of it, this may be the time change it out (even though trade in value is less due to the failure).

A tough problem. When mine went I was not on vacation. Had warrant to 80, 000 miles and then traded the truck. The new 6.7 trucks are unreal. You wont regret the trade.
