I am considering getting a small travel trailer such as a Scamper to tow with my 2007 diesel Jetta Sportswagon. I have seen the Scamper and Casita brands and was wondering if there are others and what experience anyone has had with them. For the most part it will be used by a maximum of two people plus a dog or two and might be used on some gravel roads. I would want at a minimum a toilet, decent sized refrigerator, furnace, two beds, sink, stove and water heater.Any suggestions/recommendations would be very welcome.Thanks in advance.

There are several mfrs of molded fiberglass trailers - in addition to Scamp (not Scamper, that's a different brand and style of trailer) and Casita. If I read correctly, your Jetta Sportswagon has a tow capacity of 2000 pounds(?). That said, even the 13 foot Scamp weighs 1200 pounds dry. Won't take much to put another 800 pounds in the camper. Do you know what your payload capacity is in your Jetta? Maybe consider a pop-up or maybe even A-frame, as I think they are lighter weight? Just a thought.

Well, I travel full-time in my 17' Casita and love it. Scamps seem to have a similar build quality from what I've heard, so they'd probably work well too.Mine is 14 years old, and still going strong. Molded fiberglass trailers hold up much better over time than wood or aluminum frame ones, I think a big part of it is because they don't have seams where water can get in and cause damage. Because they hold up better though, they'll cost a quite a bit more money used than other trailers of a similar size, I don't know if money is an issue for you or not.Mine's a Deluxe model, which means it has a toilet and a shower, but they're both together in the same 'room' marine style, I imagine the Scamps work the same way. Of course it also has a fridge and 2 burner stove, no oven though.I'm not real familiar with your tow vehicle, but I think before you start looking at brands the first thing you should do is look at your owner's manual and figure out what the tow rating is for it. My Casita has a listed dry weight of 2,200 lbs (and with all the modifications previous owners have done it's higher than that) and a maximum gross weight rating of 3,500. I tow it with a Dodge Dakota, it's a mid-size truck.Best of luck to you!

You also have to watch the hitch weight on the units. We have two tow vehicles and the one that can tow 2,000 lbs can only have 200 lbs of hitch weight. I would say the OP will need to scale down what they desire. With a unit like a Scamp, while the basic may weigh in at 1250 or whatever it was, that is without options and Scamp considers nearly everything an option and on the 13', the frig is an option and is very small. The bathroom is an option, awning, water heater, and on and on. I think that Heartland has discontinued the MPG. T@B will be too heavy with the bathroom added. A lot of pop-ups now hover in the area of or exceed 2,000 lbs especially when you add the bathroom. Little Guy Trailers are now making the T@B, and you can get a bathroom model. The bed is a queen, though, in most models. My daughter and I sometimes sleep in what we can the "twin bed" mode, meaning we take the backrest cushions off the side bench seats and our legs lay across the bench seats and our heads at the back of the trailer. The majority of our body is across the couch that runs the width of the trailer so it's comfortable for us. Hard to explain without a photo. That wouldn't work for my hubby, though.

We have the 16' Scamp and tow with our Nissan Xterra it does just fine. The Scamp has electric brakes on it and that helps alot. The only drawback to the Scamp is the dining area makes to a full size bed, but my husband is a pretty big guy so he usually sleeps there with one dog and I sleep at the other end which is a sofa/bunkbed with the other dog. But overall we like the camper and have had no trouble towing it with the smaller vehicle. He uses it for hunting a lot and once we put bigger tires on the Scamp he has had no trouble taking it backwoods to his hunting area. Now if we take kids (teenagers) and dogs, we gotta break out the big guns, and use our Hummer and 25' TT.

Oh yeah, a 13 foot scamp only weighs 1200 lbs with a hitch weight of 100 lbs.
