Synthetics handle high heat better than conventional oils, and towing generates more heat than normal driving.
Mobil 1 is a Group 3 synthetic, or it was last I checked, which is barely considered a synthetic. I would look at a good group 4, like Amsoil, and run one year round and based on the year and mileage you would probably be able to do once a year oil changes, something not advised with dino oil.
Conventional oils are fine for towing. - Jayco23FBExplorer

How easy or hard is Amsoil to get? - wandering1ExplorerWhy would there be any trouble using Synthetic Oil for Towing?

When it does get driven, it's probably towing or you just take it around the block once a month or so...
I'd run any oil of your choice and change it once a year since you only put 5k year on average..
When you do change it, make sure you bring it up to full operating temp before draining it (hot oil) as that will get rid of any sludge that builds up on the bottom of the pan when it sits so long...
Good luck!
Mitch - CKNSLSExplorerYou can go over to bobistheoilguy.com and find out many things about motor oil. One of those things is synthetic oil WILL NOT make your motor last any longer than conventional oil.

Motor oil does not break down.
It gets contaminated-the reason for changing the oil.
Ahh ya, that's what I meant... ;) - jfkmkExplorerMobil1 5quart jug at Wally World is usually about 25 or less. I don't think that's a significant price difference over conventional oil.
Oh, and mineral oil does break down at higher temperatures, which is why jet engines use synthetic oil. Of course your truck engine won't see that temperature, it can benefit from synthetic. - wmosesExplorer

Are there any benifits of using say Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic for the towing season? Or is regular 5w30 just as good?
I use Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy in place of the recommended 5W-30 and Mobil says that it is okay. - Home_SkilletExplorer II
