Most people on these forums know almost nothing about oil other than it's a brown liquid. They rely on what their dad's cousin told them about oil - and he knows what he knows because he worked at a gas station when he was a kid.
The fact is, synthetic oil is superior to conventional oil. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't have a clue.
The debate comes in where you decide whether or not the benefits it has are worth the extra cost to you and your driving situation.
If you really want to learn about oil - surf on over to the forums at bobistheoilguy.com. There are people there that actually know what they are talking about.
Why don't you share some statistically significant UOA showing that synthetic oil produce better wear metals than conventional oils when used when used intended and following the OLM on the same engine?
It's obvious your included in your "most people on this forum know nothing about oil". :W
Use the correct API rated oil, viscosity and don't exceed the OLM and your good to go.
1) It's spelled "you're".
2) I agree that if you live in the Southern USA and don't tow, normal oil is just fine for your average grocery getter.
3) You're assuming I was talking about wear when used in temperate climes. I was talking about when they are used in high heat/high stress and/or extreme cold conditions. There is plenty of proof that synthetic performs better in those conditions if one seeks it out. The old Consumer Reports test most bozos refer to showed no measurable differences because they used NYC Taxis which completely makes sense. I wouldn't expect any to be shown in those conditions. They never get started at -40* when not plugged in, they never tow a trailer up a mountain grade when it's 100* outside, really they just do a lot of idling and stop and go. That wears out a lot of things, but rarely is it the engine. Most of our Taxis here get 500,000 Km or more out of a Ford 4.6L, and that's after they've been a Police car for the first 175,000 Km. ib516 wrote:

A rep with Valvoline said all 5w-20 is synthetic blend. Labeled synthetic blends have a higher content of synthetic in them. A Chrysler engineer involved in the R&D of the 5.7L Hemi said if he were towing as much weight as we tow in the heat of the southeast, he would use a full synthetic just in case the temp in bearings or rings got hotter than conventional oil was rated for. Just his opinion of course. So, I use Mobil-1 for no other reason than it helps me sleep better. I'll be using it in the Prius as well just in case the engine ever starts. :B

I run synthetics for peace of mind.
Really cold weather? Synthetic is better in the cold.
Driving 500 miles in the middle of summer? Synthetics handle heat better.
Longer vacation than planned? Synthetics handle longer change intervals better.
As previously said, conventional oils, when changed at the proper intervals, work just fine. Synthetics are just better. I'm willing to pay extra for that.
BTW, I use Royal Purple. Some Walmarts carry it - $8.49 a quart. As hard as I work my truck, I'm willing to pay the extra cost.
Conventional oil was used by those in Alaska for years before synthetics came along. Conventional oil performs fine in the summer in extreme heat. YOUR MOTOR WILL NOT LAST LONGER USING CONVENTIONAL OIL VS. SYNTHETICS. 99.5% of synthetic users never use their oil to it's maximum OCI.
Spend some reading time over at bobistheoilguy.com.
Yeah, right. I've been on that site. They have oil wars just like Ford vs Chevy or 9mm vs 45 on other fora. Some good info, but still a high signal to noise ratio.
From my owner's manual:If you are in an area of extreme cold, where the
temperature falls below ?20°F (?29°C), it is
recommended that you use either an SAE 5W-30
synthetic oil or an SAE 0W-30 oil. Both provide easier
cold starting and better protection for the engine at
extremely low temperatures.
I'll listen to the manufacturer, thank you very much. Also, why does GM recommend synthetic oil for the axles? - BenKExplorerWaiting for the Slick50 folks to arrive... :B

Mobil1 5quart jug at Wally World is usually about 25 or less. I don't think that's a significant price difference over conventional oil.
Agreed. And that is why I get my Mobil 1 at Wally World. Even better there than at Sams Club.
Those are 4qt, not 5qt jugs.
You stand corrected - see here. Same price for the stuff I buy - 0W-30 AFE. :W - LynnmorExplorerFor my 6.7 Foed diesel manusl:
1For severe duty usage, use SAE 5W-40 API CJ-4.
2For biodiesel (grades B6-B20) usage, use SAE 5W-40 or SAE
15W-40 API CJ-4.
I believe that most, if not all, 5w-40 oils are synthetic. Since they add the biodiesel to much of the nations diesel fuel supply, I will use the synthetic. - N-TroubleExplorer
