Some filter experts have told me that air filters are the only filters that do better as they clog. I don't know why. Personally, I only trust DP - every other method/myth is guessing. My fleetguards start with ~1.5" and end at ~ 2.5" at 11-12k miles. Craig
Simple:
A fliter has holes in it. All media type filters do. As contaminates start to close off those holes some contaminates only partially close off thoses holes.
If a 10 micron hole gets 50% clogged up then that hole will filter down to 5 micron now. If this happens to all the holes in this filter, this filter is now 50% better at filtering out smaller contaminates. This is why some manufactures of air filters say do not clean their filter too often. And this is why companies like Honda, Harley and others say to change the oil filter every other oil change.
The only problem is pressure drop............BUT:
I have personally blocked off the oil bypass on many engines. I want full filtered oil going through some of my race engines. (Some I don't) After doing this I have never seen any pressure drop in 6K oil changes on a SBC or BBC.
IMHO if you have a substantial pressure drop during normal oil change intervals wiht a blocked off bypass, you have bigger problems with your engine.
