TC Shopping today. What Fun!

I went shopping today and it was the best kind. It was with someone else's money :)
I have a friend who wanted to move up from a popup TC so we have been scouring CL for Lance TCs. We started the day looking at an older Lance 880 that the seller said was in excellent condition. Well it was far from it in my mind, so we passed on that.

Went to lunch and scanned the ads again. A Lance 1055 had just been listed and the pictures looked great, so we called and went to see that one. I had never seen a 1055 before and was super impressed by the layout and all the storage in it as was my friend. We spent about 2 hours testing everything and found no issues whatsoever, so my friend bought it.

Now she needs a truck. It sure isn't going to go on her Tundra or Honda Fit:D Guess she's in the market for a 4WD Dually.

Oh, that hurts. SRW with a 1055? Maybe that's why it was not used much. I'm assuming the '95, 12valve CTD has 4.10's; at least I hope so. Be sure to keep the 5th gear nut tight. The NV4500 had a tendency to have loose nuts on 5th gear. The fix was to reverse the threads on the shaft/nut making it tighter, if anything with use. The NV4500 is a smooth transmission and easy to shift. It is head and shoulders above the Mopar automatic transmissions of the era. The other woe is to keep an eye on the Dana 70 rear end. Lots of housing/not much beef in the shafts or bearings. But, that era detuned, 12v. Cummins is a cult engine in the Dodge. It's kind of like Italy: it will always be there even though not much happens.

Haven't given it the microscopic inspection yet but the original and only owner was a machinist and so far everything from his estate has been beyond perfect. I still can't believe the condition of the Lance 880! It is truly as good as new.

Everything he purchased was top quality and made in the U.S. For example he has a tool box that fits the truck when he wasn't carrying the Lance. It's a Lund Challenger. His compressor was a DevilBiss, etc.

  • Well she'll be carrying the 1055 on a '95 Dodge 3500 drw diesel 5 speed. It's only got 118K miles on it and really has never done anything other than carrying a Lance. It had an 880 on it until recently. It's not been used much for the last few years so we've replaced the batteries band are about to check all hoses and belts. Obviously the tires also need to be checked.

The good news I'd that's it's already wired for a Lance, has air bags and tie downs so the 1055 should slide right in. We do need to put swing out Jack brackets on the 1055 because it wasn't on a drw.
  • I LOVE my 1055. My dually has no problems with it either. I have stock wheels/tires and only added Rancho 9000xl shocks. don't let that "dry weight" fool you! Once you fill it up with your "stuff" it's heavy... Best of luck to your friend!

  • Good choice on the 1055.
If I were looking for a new DRW I would look for a new Ram 4x4 with the 6.4 Hemi and 4:10 gears.
Not nearly as many out there compare to the diesel, but you should be able to find one for much less than a CTD.
  • Actually with full gear and my rig I am over 13000 on the Cat Scale with the 1055, truck is a 2011 4x4 with the 6.7 diesel

Good luck looking at trucks! Hopefully it will be as fun as looking for the camper. What about the camper owner - did they have a truck for sale?

    Good luck,

Congratulations on the new to them camper too!

Unfortunately, no. They actually purchased the 1055 3 years ago and never used it! The genny only had 46 hours on it.
  • This is the top article that I found on the Lance 1055, and it shows a 2,970 pound empty weight. So I am guessing that dually pickup is a requirement.

I tend to carry about 1,000 pounds of extra stuff, and if she wants 4X4 that is a 400 pound option, and will make the curb weight more for the truck.

  • that would be a good choice for the 1055. Loaded it weighs between 4000 and 4500 pounds depending on how you fill it with gear. My set up with the 1055 looks like this.
