They call it an electric turbocharger

My understanding of the "New" electric forced induction technology is that they are using an electric turbo to force air through the drive (exhaust) side of a conventional turbo to get the turbo spinning before there is enough exhaust gas flow to get the turbo spinning to reduce or eliminate turbo lag. So the electric turbo charger only runs for a short period of time when the engine is at low RPM's and beginning to accelerate.

My Duramax has variable geometry turbos for the same purpose... to start the turbo spinning earlier at lower exhaust pressure levels. It is kind of cool that the vanes in my turbo actually change pitch depending on the current exhaust pressure conditions. What I find absolutely amazing is that it is reliable!

That's a great link. Wonder how big of a engine they are using. I'm guessing in the 2 liter range.

My 400 m is just 8 to 1 compression. A cool rainy day seems to add power. If I could get it to boost enough to equal sea level air pressure, when I'm at 7 000 feet. I would be happy.

Making it work in race comparisons is not the same as making it work under California smog rules.

I wish they talked more about the vehicle charging system.

I have seen them installed in diesel applications. And where I live it gets very hot.

Again, it has to do with horsepower.
Do you know how many horsepower a mechanical fan uses in a LBZ diesel? I do. Between 20 to 30 HP depending on who one listens to.

Moving air or water takes a LOT of HP and that is a problem with electric motors.

This whole electric supercharger thing is goofy anyway IMHO.
Audi say's they do it to get rid of lag. The OEM smooth's out the throttle by wire because modern engines put out so much power they will blow the tires off. Then they go with this weird idea to get even more low end power. Weird.

I liked to street race turbo engines because they did not blow the tires off of the car like my supercharged engines did. That is what is nice about a turbo engine on the street..........nice and smooth.

Do you understand why a 500 Volt motor is smaller that a 12 volt motor of the same HP?

Every thing I have read about 'electric ' turbos is that the wheels are still exhaust gas driven ,the electric part is only to eliminate lag by getting them up to speed electrically.
No way would it make sense to drive them electrically 100% of the time,its a drivability thing .

I'd be willing to bet you're going to find variable frequency digital drives for these turbochargers which will require far less amperage than straight DC. The 200 volt battery in a Prius is less in size and weight than the two batteries in a diesel pickup. It runs the traction motor as well as the a/c. The technology is there to do a lot more with a lot less.

You shouldn't have wasted your time if my question bothered you.
As far as your answer, it was useless.

Smkettner had a great answer that was right on point. 400 volts would bring the amp draw down to 40 amps or so. If the figures from the links Turtle provided were correct.

Your additude is not appreciated by me at all and is certainly one the will discourage others.
