To tarp or not to tarp, that is the question...

I have an '01 Aerolite hybrid that I just bought and replaced the floor.
(insane floor replacement)
We only took it out twice this year but are hoping to get at least one more year before discussing trade-up options.

We've had very little rain in NJ since I bought it so I can't say for sure if I have fixed all of the leaks. This particular model has two giant 'doors' at the front and back plus side windows and a door. Add in the roof vents, AC, fridge, antenna, etc. and it is just loaded with holes.

So this my be like asking Chevy or Ford but should I cover it with a tarp for the winter or not?

I do have the fittings which use conduit to build a canopy like shown in this picture I could use to build a 'garage'. I would just size the legs to clear the trailer's roof.
  • I've never tarped and haven't had any trouble. I figure they're built to withstand hard rain driving down the road at 60+ MPH. Sitting still next to my house should be no problem. I do check in pretty regularly during the winter to be sure a leak hasn't started.
  • We cover ours and back it into the Pines. It breaks the wind and reduces the snowfall.

I have a carport for my PUP thay I am thinking about raising high enough to cover the TT.
  • For previous posts on this subject search this Forum for `rv cover' and read on. Some do and some don't.
  • Don't use any tarp that will touch the sides of camper. Any continuing wind will cause it to burn through the "paint"
  • I had one of them.. for my Ram 1500.. first heavy snow... next day snow melted.. destroying the fabric and bending the frame work..

but I got very lucky.. No harm to truck.. but frame and fabric was totaled.
but I did have the frame stacked to the ground with steel cables.

just cover unit with a heavy tarp.. and several ropes...
  • I agree with 2oldman. The wind would turn the canopy in your picture into a kite. Unless it was well fastened. In my area the winter wind would tear it apart quickly.
I would use a tarp and attach it so it is secure. Especially, if you may have a leak.
  • I used to tarp, but any significant wind would dash that plan quickly.
