Too many miles on truck before long trip?

I have a 2008 3/4 ton, GMC with 180k miles. HATE the thought of replacing it any time soon, but am I crazy to try and plan a 10k cross-country road trip towing our 5'er?

  • I had the same issues on my 05 Ram with 187,000. Never had a major repair on it and nothing on the drive train at all. But at my age DW and I decided not to risk road repairs and no warranty. So I put the 05 on CL and a couple days later had 18 grand towards a new truck. I feel more confident in the new truck even though I know in my gut the 05 would do anything I ask of it for another 100k. Probably
  • If it makes you feel better, I have a 07 with 185K and I would have no hesitation to hook up and go.
If your truck is well maintained and in good shape, there should be no worries.

If it has gone 180,000 miles with no major issues, the statistics are in your favor that it will go another 10,000 miles with no major issues. As stated above, do some preventative maintenance before the trip.

Even if you have to fix something on the road it will likely be far less expensive than a new truck.
  • My '03 Dodge/Cummins NV5600 tranny truck has 252k miles with excellent maintenance. I've owned it since new. I pull a 11200 lb 5th wheel trailer and wouldn't hesitate to hook up this minute and take that trip.
Now not knowing much about your truck other than a '08 3/4 ton GM what can we say.
I will say a 100000 mile trip with any new or used truck...any thing can happen.
  • Has it show any warning signs? If not I'd just give a complete service maintenance on it and take off. Might think about infrequent service items like changing the differential fluid and the transmission filter ect.
