Tow weight

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a question. We are looking at a hybrid with a tow weight of 3567 pounds. We would be towing it with a Jeep Grand Cherokee that has a 5000 pound limit. Is this trailer too heavy for us to safely tow? Thanks
  • I tow with a Diesel Liberty. I weigh about 4500 fully loaded and use a WDH. You know it is back there.
  • 2500 sub. Vs a 5000lb hybrid. Why? 7600lb tow rating. Sub loaded down with gear and mythacle 3400lb dry weight of rig. 600lbs tongue weight and full rear of sub to the roof with cooler, wood, grill, gear.

Don't get me started on half ton subs!
  • Please don't run away.
Poppin fresh is the only one that is making a lick of sense so far.

    You need real numbers.
On your drivers side door jamb will be a sticker, }|"Weight of passengers and cargo must not exceed XXX"
As to the trailer, the number you are reading in the brochure is fictional. You must look at a couple of actual trailers and they will have a yellow sticker showing actual gross or laden weight capacity. This is the number you must work with.

I can go to the Ram builders page and get actual figures for my truck by VIN.
Maybe Jeep has a similar web page.
Every thing on this forum must be taken with a grain of salt. We have a few real experts here and a lot of folks that just spout opinion.
  • Time out.

Not enough information to present opinions.

What trailer are you looking at? What does the Jeep's sticker say you have for payload? What is your passenger situation like? Do you plan on boondocking and need to fill the fresh water tank for towing? How far is your average trip?
  • Your mythical 5000 lb max tow capacity, is what the marketing folks say your Jeep could tow, with the propper equipment, and without any passengers or cargo.

Even with a propperly equipped vehicle, when you add people and cargo, that tow capacity goes down, pound for pound.

In the real world, that max tow capacity is 5000 lbs, minus the weight of everything and everybody, you put in or on the vehicle.

The average load (dishes, pots and pans, camping gear, BBq, groceries, and water, etc) in a trailer is 800 - 1000 lbs.

Unloaded weights are notorious for being inaccurate. Many times, they don't include batteries and propane.

Looking at an unloaded weight of 3567, you're probably looking at more than 5000 lbs, when loaded for camping. With a passenger (or two or three) and some cargo, your true tow capacity could be well under 5000 lbs. I think, your concerns are quite valid.
  • jeep gran cherokee is a unibody vehicle which means no WDH i wouldnt do it ive done it and its not worth it a cheap half ton truck or tahoe with a WDH u could haul what ever u want no stress
  • Is 3567 lbs an unloaded trailer or loaded ? I suspect unloaded.

Add 1000# minimum to that and you will in the neighborhood of what it will be as towed & that probably doesn't include water on board.

The Cherokee may have a tow capacity of 5000 lbs but that is not as important as
the "payload" capacity of the rig. You need to know that number "FIRST"

Does the Cherokee have a Factory installed towing package ?
