Those were real four legged skunks :) they really did not bother us, they would just sort of wonder through the campsites looking for food every now and then.
Great Basin is a wonderful park, we've been there four times and usually spend three to four days. The first time we went was back in 1998 and the Park wasn't much different except there seemed to be less people back then. The Rangers were very pro-active back then also, they would stop by your campsite and chat for awhile and put on Fireside Programs at Upper Lehman every nite. The Wheeler Peak Hike is really something and there is another Trailhead starting from Wheeler Peak Parking area that goes up and through the Bristlecone Pines, very interesting. To stand there and look at a living thing that is well in excess of 3000 years old really puts one in their place. :) In 1964 they actually let scientist cut one down, :( now called Prometheus. They counted 4900 rings in that Tree.
