Traveling northern Michigan over to Minnesotta

Have a question, How is traveling on HWY 2 top of Michigan over to Minnesota. I am thinking about coming back this way after a wedding in Grand Rapids Mn. Don't know if there are places to overnight and gas stations with plenty of room. Any ideas?

Maybe the right question is , is that way travel trailer friendly
  • We will be coming home the Monday after Memorial Day, and we were looking forward to a nice scenic ride home to Virginia. Gas, and overnight parking are a concern for me as we are planning this trip.

It's a great drive, my favorite way to leave Michigan if I'm heading West

What time of year are you looking at? If it's summertime, Lake Gogebic State Park is beautiful (as most michigan parks are), and wasn't very busy the past two times I was there.

If you're asking about places to park overnight for free, I'm not really sure. I forget if it was Michigan or Minnesota along US-2, but the Walmart was not allowing overnight except to commerical traffic per some county ordinance... thinking it was Michigan. Of course, the county owned its own expensive campground, go figure.
  • Why 2 is a very nice road and very scenic. I travel it every. A good portion of it right along Lake Michigan and it quite often can be pretty windy if that is at all a concern to you.
  • We took Hwy 2 from the Whitefish Point area - camped at Tahquamenon - and across the top, then turned off to head south to Green Bay. It's been a few years and I don't recall that there was much in the way of gas stations/restaurants. The road itself was good and a pretty, scenic drive. I would make sure to have a full tank when you head out. I do remember stopping at a terrific winery not far from where we headed south. If we had any wine left, I'd tell you the name, but you can just search Michigan Wineries if interested. When are you planning this? Probably not a stretch I'd want to travel if you're thinking before spring....whenever that is up there. Enjoy and be safe.
  • Since we pass this way every year to visit family I can tell you that you will have no problem. We have a 30 foot trailer with a dodge diesel dually and can make it across the UP with one take of diesel.
