Truck bed dimensions by year

I am looking into upgrading my truck and I am trying to find out the box dimensions of the Chevy Silverados by year. The main goal is to get the newest truck possible while being able to keep my current canopy, rollup tonneau cover, and fiberglass hard cover as well. These all get used for various things over the winter when the truck camper is winterized. In a perfect world my frame mounted tie downs could get used again as well but this is less important. My current truck is a 2008 2500hd silverado and would like to upgrade to something newer in the 3500hd class.
Can anyone direct me to a chart or graph that would give me the dimensions of the box of Silverado trucks showing all years?

Something I did before upgrading my truck was to find one the same model as mine on a car lot or somewhere and measure the top of the box, write down the pertinent measurements on a paper, making a little map/plan of the exact sizes of everything. Things like center to center of the stake pockets, measured front, mid and back, and also front to back dimensions. Couldn't measure my own without removing my rack and boxes, which is a major task to do.

Then I found the truck I wanted to upgrade to on a lot and did the same thing, comparing the 2 sets of measurements to see if it would fit or what mods I had to make if I bought that model.

Then I didn't have to rely on somebody's speculated guess opinion on whether it would fit or not.

This is probably a good route to go. I take my bed covers off all the time so measurements are easy to get. I can compare these to what my canopy salesman says and trucks I find for sale.

  • Assuming you’re talking same brand truck but newer?
There’s only one body style change to date from the 08 listed in your sig.
But I’m sure your canopy guy knows the applications....
  • Yeah, maybe I should go back to the place I got my canopy and bed covers. They probably know the box/bed rail sizes with ease and how they relate year to year. With some of the tapering of the box and narrowing at the tailgate its probably not as easy as I hoped.
  • Truck in sig has a ladder track and toolbox setup that has had to be modified twice over the years when I've upgraded my truck.

It's not so much the box dimensions but more importantly the width and location of the stake pockets and top rails. The top rails have changed shape many times. Every time I change a body style I have take my rack off, cut the pegs off the bottom and weld them back on in a different location.
Front of the box is wider than the back.

So canopies and other things are hard to interchange.

Be careful with your definition of 'dimensions'. I went from a 2002 GMC to a 2011 GMC. The chart shows the same dimensions for both but I can tell you the tailgate opening is different. The 2011 has radiused corners calling for a 1 1/2 inch riser to clear it.

Right! You need to investigate what years the body style changes. Dimensions don't tell the story.
Even in the old days, 1987 and earlier, before any of the Big Three started tapering the truck boxes narrower at the rear, dimensions were standard and canopies would physically fit all three, but the back of a Ford cab angled forward, Chevys were more vertical. You still needed the correct one for it to look right.
  • Same bed style GMT 900 trucks through 2014? I believe for HD pickups. Year earlier for 1/2 tons.
    K2xx platform up thru 2018-19.
New style in 2019, just 1/2 tons I believe.
Tape measure and a trip to the car dealer or your neighbor with a newer GM would be the sure bet.
