In California and Nevada the truckers are usually driving at 65-75 MPH and the people pulling 5th-wheel trailers are doing the same. The folks in cars and pickups are driving at 70-85 MPH. It would be stupid to drive at 55 MPH or even at 60 MPH in those conditions and it would also be irresponsible and cause others to do a lot more lane changing and this is dangerous.
that is a complete and utter lie. I've lived in CA all my life and have driven my camper around for many of my driving years. I JUST got back from driving I5 from Sacramento to Oregon and I NEVER saw a big rig exceed 60mph either direction. A very few cars did exceed the posted speed, but my guess it was within 5mph or so. I drove with my speed control set for 57mph and verified with my sat gps. In over 800 miles on that trip alone, I was NEVER passed by a big rig. Never. Not once.
I drive regularly between Sacramento and the San Francisco bay area and again, at most, there a few drivers that will exceed the posted speed limit. However most of them are at the posted and NONE of the semi's along that route drive more than 60mph with many trips where they don't exceed the posted 55.
To say it would be stupid to drive the posted 55 mph is so outrageously full of BS. Claiming those who obey the law are the ones who are irresponsible?!? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!
