November through March are our worst months to cross the passes. On either end of this period you may get storms, but you can wait those out for a clear window if you have the time. Thanksgiving through Easter is when I avoid towing over the passes.
I had my share of chains when I was younger. In 1989, I bought my first 4wd and haven't installed chains since although I still carry them. My GVWR is under 10,000 lbs which also me to run in 4wd during chain-up requirements if I am not towing.
