Truck Racks/Ladder Type Racks?

For a canoe/kayak or two, smaller dinghy, a c-clamp style setup will work. BUT, if you truly want to use the full capacity of a rack like this, ie 500-700+ lbs, or as I do upwards of 1500-2000 lbs. bolt the fool thing to the bed! Otherwise, you are asking for trouble.........do not ask how I know! Other than to say, I found out the hard way!

My Brother is using the ladder rack that is sold by Harbor Freight. About $250, 800# capacity, cab over design, lots of tie down points, no drilling, it sets in the stake pockets. Use the 20% off coupon on a single item and pick it up for about $200.

I recently went through the same search and purchased a VersaRack with Pocketloks from Amazon. The Pocketloks install in the 4 stake pockets and the VersaRack bolts to the pocketloks. No drilling required. Unfortunately I just received it and it isn't mounted on my truck yet.

Cost is under $200.00 for the Rack and Pocketloks, seems strong and lightweight. One issue I had is some of the nuts and washers were missing from my box(box torn during shipping). Trying to get a hold of the manufacturer(MasterRack) is next to impossible for help. I ended up just buying what I needed from a local hardware store.

I've looked at the Yakima Outdoorsman, can't find any on Craigslist. I might look for those, I do have Yakima bars and kayak saddles.
