use of interior portable heater during storage

Anyone with experience using a portable electric heater during storage to prevent water line/tanks from freezing? Coastal Oregon

If it would prevent freezing would be much simpler than winterizing.
My trailer is stored in an open front metal barn.

  • Sorry not a good idea as some exposed lines & drains may still freeze in adition to water heater. I blow air through lines, anti freeze in drains and still run small heater on timer to keep canned food from freezing
  • Personally I would never leave an unattended electric heater running in my RV at anytime. Winterizing take me about 15 minutes, then no worries at all.
  • In the days when I had a boat moored on the Columbia River, I used a couple of strategically placed heat lamps to prevent freezing. Never had a problem, even during a couple of years that the Columbia froze deep enough that I could walk around the boat on the ice.
  • The heater will help with the humidity, but the heat won't get down to the bottom of the tanks or some other places that could freeze such as your drain valves.

  • May work ok providing you don't have any prolonged power outages.

I would prefer to winterize using RV anti-freeze.
  • If you do use a portable heater, put a remote reading thermometer in the camper to verify the temperature inside. It's cheap insurance. I would keep it above 40° to make sure the lines near the floor or walls are not below freezing.
  • I would use one only if:

    - I'm around to check it almost daily
    - I'm taking camping trips in winter and need the coach to be ready to use
    - There's enough heat to protect all the lines (unlikely) and the power it draws doesn't heat up any extension cords (likely)
    - I've drained the lines
  • I would have no problem using them. Just set it on a real low stat setting and call it good. I use light bulbs and heat tape to prevent my stick and brick from freezing so I see no problem with a modern heater.
  • Winterize it.......only takes minutes and works

    Portable heater.......
    power outage/no heat
    tripped breaker/no heat
doesn't fully circulate heat thru out trailer
    uses power unnecessarily

    Winterize it.......
  • air and antifreeze are your best defense against freezing. Heaters like to stop working, or sometimes they work too well and burn things down.

If you want to avoid winterizing, look for heated indoor storage.
