Used Truck Advice: 06 GMC 2500 Sierra 4x4 gaser

2500HD's are underrated. The rear axle rating is 6084lbs with stock tires, and the truck only weighs 2800-2900lbs on the rear axle with an empty bed. That leaves you 3100-3200lbs of axle capacity for a camper.

These trucks don't even squat with 2000lbs in the bed.

I know some people throw on 19.5's and stuff sections of well casing between the axle and frame to hold the rear end up, then plop a 4000lb camper on a truck like that.

That model of GM rims on that truck are tough as nails and will handle the weight of the proposed camper no problem.
An economical wheel upgrade for those trucks are 3rd/4th gen Dodge Ram wheels of one wants to get away from the skinny OE rims. And the GM lug nuts and hub caps fit on many several of the Dodge variants. Makes them look OE and then you can have a 17x8 or 18x8 rim.

I had the same truck...2 mods for sure, transfer flow fuel tank, replaces small oem tank. With the factory tank I was looking for fuel ever 2 to 3 hours, may not seem like a big deal as many want a pee break by then...I found the additional 10 Gallons really helped with trip planning.

Secondly, Timbrens will be a must have, we aren't a fan of air bags...

Truck should already have e rated rubber..

That truck will do the job I added Timbrens to mine Rancho 9000 shocks. I put 30,000 miles with a 2800 lb camper and loved it.

Biggest downside to that truck is the 26 gallon fuel tank. With an 8.1 he will be getting gas every 150 miles.

Its a moot point since he bought it, but that truck should have zero issues with just an 8-footer.

If I were them I would keep looking for a lower mileage 1 ton single rear wheel.
RAM usually has higher payload than the other 2.

thanks for making me laugh!!! They have been looking for a while and used trucks are very hard to find in so cal.

Looks like sharkman has the best answer for whether a Lance 815 will work considering he has one on a GMC of nearly the same year. The ad said the payload is 3317 lbs, so that should work. That 8.1 with a 4.1 will likely be thirsty.

We have a 2500 diesel with a lance 815, the glove box sticker saids 1600lbs TC weight max and the 815 weights 1900lbs, hope that info is useful.

That truck will have a 9200 pound GVWR with the stock tires. Ready to go with family and full tank of fuel its going to weigh between 6500 and 7000 pounds. Not leaving much room for a camper. They really should lik at a 3500 truck instead.
