The 6.2L/4.30 truck performs better.
What's with the amber light on in the gauge cluster of the V10 truck?
Hard to tell. It is in the general area of the low tire pressure light. - carringbExplorer

I can also tell you my V10 with 4.30 gears performed WAY better than my V10 with 3.73 gears. (I have 4.56 now, which is even better!) - itguy08Explorer

based on that its almost night and day, the 6.2 seems to pull so much stronger right off the line and simply keeps going strong. I wonder what the V10 with 4:30's would work like.
It would be night and day towards the V10. Beofre I lifted, my V10 with 4.10's would walk my work 6.2 with the 4.30's. While I will eventaully have to go to a 6.2, I'll keep my gas guzzler as long as possible. - alexleblancExplorer

The V-10 has been around for a decade and a half, is well known to ANY shop that could possibly need to work on it, and more or less had all the bugs worked out of it 10 years ago. The 6.2 is an impressive and powerful motor, no doubt... But it's also a NEW motor mated to a NEW transmission. ANY shop can fix a V-10... Not so much for a 6.2. If either one breaks, it's not likely to be in your driveway when it does. If you're hundreds or thousands of miles from home, which would you rather be trying to find parts for?
If you see double digits empty OR loaded, you're doing good... But don't expect it. - Denny___JamiExplorerThe 6.2 with 4.30 gears is rated to pull 15600 and it does a fine job doing it, the first trip I took that was 1600 miles pulling it average 8.25. It only had 870 miles on it when we left do I'm sure it will improve.
Denny - nohurryExplorerAs long as Ford (or the other brands as well), put the gas motors in the 3/4 & 1 tons, there will be people that pull heavy with them. That's what they're for right. Well yes, they are, chassis wise, and some will load it up based on what a salesman tells them, and in their defense, the tow ratings may even allow it. In reality though, you have to know what gas powered 385 HP will do with the given gears/trans you choose. If you know that, you know what to expect performance, AND mileage wise. I choose the truck in my sig based on towing a 7K lb TT and am very happy so far. If I planned on any more weight I would have ponied up for a diesel.
As to the original question. Up to 10K trailer weight, either the V10/410's or the 6.2/4:30's will do well up to 10K trailer weight. Slight edge in toque to the V10. But expect to pay at the pump. I clocked 9.5 MPG's on two trips so far, but haven't pulled any mountain passes, and haven't even got 2,000 miles on the odometer yet. - jerem0621Explorer II6/8 pulling heavy is about to be expected with these rigs.
