Volkswagen completes first non Tesla cross US charge network
Looks like Volkswagen thru their Electrify America division completed the first cross USA charging network for non Tesla users. I’ve been to a bunch of these sites and they are usually multi stall sites with mostly CCS and usually one or two Chademo handles. More and more seem to have one site with more of a pull thru arrangement better suited for tow vehicles with small trailers. Usually a few 100 kw stalls and one 350 kw stall. Still no easy pay method but the App is getting better. Rumour has it Volkswagen’s will have some navigation communication with the car or truck so pre conditioning can take place like Tesla’s but apparently that is still a few years away. But it is a start for non Tesla owners of EV cars and trucks. Ford, rivian and Lordstown all use CCS charging formats and of course Tesla can use Chademo with an adapter so a plus for all the future EV truck makers.
Also looks like they have two more cross country routes in the making for completion by end 2021. Canada already has two cross country routes with Petro Can and Tesla both finishing theirs within days of each other last year. Volkswagen’s Electrify Canada’s cross country Canada network should be up by early 2021. I noticed some of the Tesla and Petro Canada stalls are designed with towing in mind but haven’t seen that with Electrify Canada’s design. In my opinion this will come to a head sooner than later once there are 4 manufacturers cranking out Electric trucks. Rivian, Lordstown, Ford and TESLA are all expected to start production by end 2021. Jmho.
Here’s a link to peruse for the future E-truck fans.
