Vortec 6.0L owners: are you happy?

This is my first post, so I’ll start off with the question and you can ignore the rest of the background info if you want. For those of you who use your 6.0 L Vortec to haul a TC, are you happy or would you rather have a bigger gas engine or a diesel? I’m looking at a great condition/low mileage 2006 Silverado 3500 SRW (CC/LB) with a 6.0L Vortec & 4.10 rear axle, and so far most of the info I’ve seen for this combo has been positive. I’d like to get some other feedback before pulling the trigger, and I understand the limitations of this choice: see below.

My DW and I have been considering a TC for about a year now, and I’ve been lurking on this site ever since to soak in the vast array of knowledge and experience of forum members (yes, I’m sucking up!). We rented a Lance 850 on a 2009 Silverado 3500 SRW 6.0 L Vortec over the Thanksgiving holiday here in Alaska as a “test drive”, since that would likely be the fringe of when we’d ever use it. The truck did fine, even though the TC was likely a little heavy for it (about 2,900 lbs wet weight according to the sticker). We had a great time dry camping (even at 10 degrees!) and have decided to move forward with the process. Now the fun begins!

We have a couple of constraints, but my DW and I are fine with the trade-offs. We cannot consider a diesel because of DW’s allergy/asthma/odor sensitivities. I’ve had numerous diesel work trucks over the years and I certainly know what we’ll be missing, but all the torque in the world will be wasted if I can’t get my DW in the truck! Also, we we’re not considering a dually for similar reasons: the truck will have an active life when the TC isn’t on it, and DW just isn’t comfortable driving a dually. That limits the array of TCs that we’re looking at (ideally < 2,700 lbs wet weight), but that is fine with us. There is a short list of hard-sided TCs within that weight range that will suit our needs, and we’re also still considering pop-ups.

Step one is to get the truck, and for our situation, this combo seems like a winner. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I have zero regrets on ordering my 2500HD Sierra with a 6.0 Vortec for use here in Alaska. Plenty of power (especially at our elevations), runs smooth with the new 6 speed transmission, engine provides heat many miles before a diesel (which is huge in the winter), gasoline is available everywhere (including in the spare cans for my ATV's and snowmachines), and the additional payload is handy with a truck camper and toys in tow. Do it!
  • Thanks, everyone. Great feedback so far, exactly what I was looking for.

coolmom42: We're O.K. with the bears. Even a pop-up has a lot more protection than my Kelty tent!

1mtnman: Good to hear about the power at high altitudes. One reason we're buying it is a trip from AK to AZ, so we'll be up and down some hills!

silversand & Bob/Olallawa: Thanks for the heads-up on the potential transfer case issues: yes it is a 4X4.
  • The 6.0 gas GM is a very strong power plant with the 4:10 gears. Had three of them pulling heavy travel trailers. There could be a transfer case pump rub problem at some point if yours would be a 4X4 and not modified yet.
  • We have 41,700 miles on our '04 hauling a camper half your proposed weight. Zero issues with engine, transmission, and other components. Owned since new (10 years), i had undercarriage bathed in industrial grade anti corrosion right out of showroom, and twice a year ever since. Everything from tires up to roof in near mint condition (just had it re evaluated by insurance adjuster in september).

The only acheles heals are: transfer case oil pump bracket rub through; rapid rusting of brake lines (if it has never seen anti rust coating); softish brake pedal feel (have your brake fluid changed at roughly 35,000 miles); and finally, premature instrument cluster failure (a do it yourself fix for under $120 is available).

Concluding, the Vortec 6 is a bulletproof engine, easily capable of 500,000 miles with severe duty service maintenance, and all the above can easily be mitigated with preventive maintenance. If that '06 has been meticulously maintained (with verifiable records), meticulously undercarriage anti rust sprayed, and all the service bulletins done (several electrics, brake boost inspected and steering intermediate shaft replaced), this would be an extremely reliable truck to haul that TC for several decades.

    Good luck.
  • My Wolf Creek weighs 3000lb loaded and I haul it with a 2005 2500HD 6.0 410.1 axle ratio. All my towing is at high altitudes and I never have a problem with power. I average 10-11 mpg.
  • I would not get a pop-up if you are heading into bear country. Even if a bear can't reach it, you might have more scent through the porous sides to attract bears, than with a hard-sided unit. Just a thought.
  • The 6.0 is a proven engine. My last truck with TC was a 6.0 and we had no problems hauling a 2500# wet weight camper.
