Weight Distribution Hitch Question

Newbie TT question. I have a 2014 Ram 3500 SRW with a payload capacity of 4,022lbs. Do I need a weight distribution hitch for a TT with a dry tongue weight of 643lbs?

Are you getting a new TT, or is this question from a friend? Or are you just bored and asking a question on a slow morning?
  • I almost always purchase tow vehicles that are more than adequate to tow without a WD hitch. Most late model GM HD pickups qualify. No need to mess with the contraptions when a well engineered and balanced trailer hitched to a competent tow vehicle will not sway, If one needs a magic hitch to control porpoising or sway, they have something wrong in their setup.

WD hitches were developed back when we towed with softly sprung sedans and station wagons. Your RAM does not fit that description but old habits are hard to break, as you are finding out.
  • No. My 5x10 utility trailer has a tongue weight that heavy on occasion. Never had any issues.
  • Need? No.
Desireable ? Yes, VERY.First your dry weight is not important. It will be substantially more when loaded.

Second, With my 1 ton dually, I can teel the difference in my WD being out of adjustment by 1 hole. Leaving WD totally off would be a huge difference.

I would get a WD if it was me. It will handle much better, and feel much better.
As cheap as they are (you don't need the best) why not?

Probably not, but as mentioned above, it will handle better with WD.

    X2.
I would try it without it and if you feel the truck being moved around in your lane then get one.
Oh and after 15 years of owning my Ram, I'm still glad I have it.
  • Assuming that you are not kidding, this question has been asked and answered seventy four time on here.
What does your owner's manual say about such things? Do you "think" you need one? If you "need" one with that much tow vehicle, I am glad that I don't own a RAM.
  • Probably not, but as mentioned above, it will handle better with WD.
  • I've towed about that hitch weight with my f150 comfortably so you should be way far into the comfort zone with your truck.
  • IMHO, no.

But you will get about a dozen responses on here that will say you could have the potential of being a mass murder if you don't have one on. :B

What I did was just snug up the WD on my truck to keep down the porpiosing. I did not want to transfer any weight to the front. With a diesel engine I had a bunch up there as is.
