Well here you go boys

Well on the way into work Monday the 48RE bit the big one, kinda. I knew the converter was slipping but never thought it would take out the trans. On the way in the truck would slip hard going from first to second. But it never kicked a code and only after the oil got above 150*.

Dropped the truck off at the shop Monday night they pulled the trans Tuesday ordered a 3 disc low stall converter and rebuild kit with a trans go shift kit. Picked the truck up this afternoon they showed me the clutch discs and steels. Third gear was warped discs were pitted and the TQ was full of pieces of disc.

Now I have to say I'm a bit disappointed as I have changed the fluid and filter every 30,000 miles so at 139,000 to have a TC go south is not making Don a happy camper, plus the fact that our bank account is $1,900 lighter also.

    Yep they charged me wholesale, a buddy is a diesel mechanic and told them to charge me his rate. A bottle of Crown is coming his way.

    Yes the bands were done at the same shop last year and they told me then that the TC seamed to be "soft" and I should think about replacing it. Well at the time I didn't have the cash and I wanted a Georend trans. We sold the TT so towing is not an issue but at the price he gave me the 3 disc was a no brainier....even for me.

    Yes 10 years with over half the mileage towing a 8500/9600# trailer probably is not bad.

    Smok'n deal in my book for a total rebuild with the parts you listed.

    I have 180K on my 06 Dodge Diesel and when I bought the truck on 2008 with 40K on it I put $4800 in a CD for a built transmission down the road. Haven't had to touch the money yet! (Touch wood!)

    Not sure if the 04 had a different transmission from the 06...but mine is still strong and I pull a 10K# trailer regularly and a Truck Camper as needed. I certainly don't baby my truck.

    I've broken three universal joints being a bit foolish (fuelish?) with my Juice With Attitude programmer...........475HP and over 800pounds foot torque....Don't need no Charger or GT500.... :-)

    That's a lot of tark making up for that 31% tark reduction at the other end. Should be good for another 10 years.

    Stinks about having to shell out nearly $2G Don but look at the positive--you have improved the performance of your truck, you're now triple-disc so I'd think your durability improved, and as CB pointed out it could've been much more expensive. (The XC90 V8 we have in the family has an Aisin 6-speed & I shudder to think what the bill on a replacement would be)

    And maybe the best part, you won't even need to give your trans a second thought for a handful of years minimum!

    If the tc starts slipping the tranny isn't far behind. Crude from the Tc can only do harm.

    I would say 1900 is pretty cheap.

    Have you ever adjusted the band?
    If not it will lead to a shortened life for sure. It will also destroy its drum so if that's listed on the parts list, thats what happened. It's not a normal rebuild part.

    Sorry about your trans, but the silver lining SRT8 is something to smile about. I looked at them really hard before purchasing my 2014 Shelby GT500. I love the looks of the Challengers. Fingers crossed mama comes thru for you this Spring!

    $1900 isn't bad all. At least is wasn't an Aisin. That one cost Daimler $5,500 when it went out on me with about 65,000 miles on it (that 4500 wore the Sterling badge, so Dodge couldn't warrantee it).
