- jbeeExplorerI have an 09 f250 with a 6.4 that has right at 70k on it. I deleted and tuned at around 30k. Unloaded mileage around town is from 11-13 depending on mix. Highway the highest I have seen is about 16. The power tuned is phenomenal and the shifting is on point with good tuning. Loaded with my 5er at 15k I get between 8-11 depending on the mix. I have only had one issue with it that required a dealer, the tstat housing leaking. Other than that, it has been reliable to date. The fit and finish of the interior IMO is light years above the dodge and chevys of that year range as well.
- JudgerrExplorerThanks everyone. I guess I will just keep my V-10. Haven't quite turned 78,000 miles yet and it is doing the job pretty well. I just spotted the 09 at the dealer and they are asking less than book value. I suspected it was to good to be true. Thanks for all the replies!
Actually I am pretty happy with my truck. But the 09 is a "Lariat" much fancier model!
Thanks again! - Me_AgainExplorer III"What is the general view of this engine?"
With or without the cab removed for engine repair???? With the cab removed the view is great.
Chris - Wills6_4_HemiExplorerI have an 08 6.4, when things break it will cost an arm and a leg. Mine is not stock so some of the weak points are gone (in the barn) lol. Mpg stock is bad but I get 14.2 towing my 8500lb TT and my golf cart in the bed. I get 18mpg arond town empty and have seen 21 mpg hwy. All hand calculated. I am on my 2nd radiator and many more parts replaced under warranty, the last time at 59K it had $5000 in warranty work done. at 60K I made some aftermarket changes and have not had anymore probs I am now at 83K miles.
- dahkotaExplorerOur 08 has 79K miles and never a radiator replacement. We also get better highway mileage than we did in our previous gas truck (up to 22 mpg @55 mph). In the city, not so much.
- TargaExplorerMy '09 (76,000 miles) just had its 5th radiator installed yesterday. Two guys I work with have owned there 09's for a year, both have had there radiators replaced. Sounds like radiator replacements for a 6.4 is just routine maintenance at 20,000 miles and $1200 a pop.
- jerem0621Explorer IIRun!!!! Much better options out there. Particularly the Ford V10 of the same era. If not brand loyal the Duramax is a NICE motor in a nice truck. Cummins is also a great choice.
- MrVanExplorerI think you can find a better option.
- rhagfoExplorer IIIThe 6.4 is an improved 6.0! They have fewer problems than the 6.0, but still higher than normal. The issue with both of these engines is that failures tend to be catastrophic in nature. The failure rate is likely less than 5%, but that is a lot of engines.
I now own my first non Ford truck due to the 6.0/6.4, not worth the gamble to me. I like my simple Six, gets the job done, and this is at 267,000 miles.
Please don't go from that 2000 V10, to a 6.0 or 6.4. If you want to step up to a diesel go to a DMax or Cummins both have a better reliability rating than that 6.4. Those two engines also have the highest maintenance cost of the big three.
