When did Lance go to an Aluminum/Azdel construction

I've been hawking the classifieds and you see a lot of used Lances for sale. Not surprising given the popularity. Does anyone know when Lance went to the current aluminum/azdel construction methods? I would love to find a used unit in really great condition but would prefer Lance's newer construction methods.

  • After doing some research, it looks like the aluminum frames began in 2005. I went to the Lance Support site and looked at the various years' brochures. The first mention of azdel (by doing a search in the pdf doc) is in the 2012 brochure. Not sure if this means they didn't use azdel until then, but given the way they now advertise its use, if they used it prior to 2012 you think you would see it in their brochure.
  • My 2010 1040 has more lauan than I like on the underside. Got to watch where tire spray goes and seal accordingly.
  • I keep hearing about the reduced gross vehicle weight using Azdel.Since I am a curious cat would someone please post the reduction in actual pounds.

I went looking on GOOGLE earlier and found this LANCE comment... I am assuming this includes their TRUCK CAMPERs as well...

    "Major Lance Product Features

    AZDEL Thermoplastic Composite

Eliminate Rot & Mold | Insulate | Sound Proofing

AZDEL has effectively replaced Lauan Plywood in the construction of RV's since 2006. AZDEL is 50% lighter than plywood, reducing gross vehicle weight and increasing load capacity. This equates to lighter duty tow vehicles, increased gas mileage and reduced wear on your RV and tow vehicle. It is not affected by moisture, will not absorb or retain water and does not mold, mildew or rot."

Aluminum frame started in 2006, but if the camper doesn't leak, wood is fine just a little heavier, I just bought a 2003 and it is still perfect, actually my older 1994 is sill just fine with no problems

Thanks Gregg. I'm good with wood also. I know wood has a lot of advantages also. I just don't have much knowledge yet on tc's as to how to check for structural soundness or where to look for rot on wood construction.

Do you know if there were any issues with the first year of the new construction methods? There's an '06 for sale in my area.
