- nevadanickExplorerDEF system has a filter also.
- Perrysburg_DodgExplorerThe only thing contaiminated Def will do is maybe clog the injector that's it! No more of a concern then the fuel you buy!
The DEF is injected on the front side of the dpf not in the engine! The pumps at all stations have filters on them just like the fuel pumps do.
Man we do have a bunch of chicken littles on here.

Your manual, and I assume this is true for the Powerstroke and Duramax as well, just calls for API certified DEF. Walmart Super Tech is API certified and runs a bit over $8 per 2.5 gallon jug, and I've used it without issues - it's more convenient for me than driving across town to get it at a pump. I don't see a reason to pay more for the name brand stuff - it probably comes from the same factory anyway.
Which is 1.75 to 2.00 higher than at a truck stop. Buying from a truck stop gets you the freshest Deffects and you only buy what you need to fill the tank.

But it also gets you the highest risk of contaminated DEF as well compared to a sealed container.
I've been running the API rated stuff in a container for almost 4 years and 92k miles without a single DEF issue.

If you have a contaiminated DEF incident, the price of the repair will be MANY MANY times more than the savings you will get over hundreds of thousands of miles buying it at a station.
For me, with the small amount that our trucks use, and the puny cumulative possible savings...

I walk in the automotive entrance at Walmart within 50' is the Peak DEF pick up one 2.5G carton, turn around to the Automotive checkout pay, they then buss the door open, go to truck empty carton, break down box place into WM's trash container.
I do this when the gauge is at 1/4 that way I know the whole 2.5G will fit.
I will be heading this week from SoCal to MorRyde in Indiana and will carry an extra 2.5 plus a full tank.
I usually fill my Diesel tank at truck stops, I may give the DEF a try if the conditions look good at a truck stop soon.
I've found that my 2015 2500 Ram will take an entire 2.5 gallon jug of DEF when the gauge shows 1/2 tank.
I have found that to be true also. - whjcoExplorer

I do see them at semi aisles, but only use those when I am pulling my enclosed trailer. If I am traveling with just my truck camper, I just use "the little guy" aisles.
I buy DEF in jugs when not around bulk dispensers and will also refill my jugs at dispensers if I have empties with me. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIII walk in the automotive entrance at Walmart within 50' is the Peak DEF pick up one 2.5G carton, turn around to the Automotive checkout pay, they then buss the door open, go to truck empty carton, break down box place into WM's trash container.

Well I don't support the Walton family and my truck runs 10,000 miles on a full tank of DEF. If your truck is using that much DEF you might want to have it looked at.
Point being it's a heck of a lot easier to pull up to a pump, swipe your card, put the nozzle in, pull the handle and let it fill. Or hold two boxes hoping the tube doesn't pop out and spill all over the side of your truck, whatever works for you and makes you warm and fuzzy.

BTW that 10,000 miles includes towing a 6000#+ boat to the lake Eire 40 to 60 miles round trip two to three times a week May through October.
As far as how much DEF my truck uses it's right on what the book says.
If your 6000 lb boat is putting an appreciable load on your diesel truck that would impact your DEF usage then you need your truck checked.
If you're getting 10,000 miles with a tank of DEF then you're saving about 1/2 what I figured. In about 100,000 miles you're saving about $25.- tinner12002Explorer

There is no way I would pay what they want for Mopar DEF. Its all the same. I have been using the brand that is sold at Tractor Supply called Terra Cair in my ram and haven't ever had an issue. It's 8 bucks for 2.5 gallons.
Yes I fell into that trap when picking up my new Ram! I get it now at wally world in the 2.5 gal containers. - Perrysburg_DodgExplorerWell I don't support the Walton family and my truck runs 10,000 miles on a full tank of DEF.
