Why the hard feelings about the 6.0 Chevy?

So been doing a lot of research and reading because my towing has been relegated to my 2010 Suburban 2500. Yes it has the 6.0 which, IMO, runs pretty good, and tows fairly well too. Again, IMO, the engine runs better after tuning, mainly due to TM and shift patterns more than anything else.
This engine, especially in the 2010 model, has the VVT and runs hard and pulls hard all the way through the powerband. It has more HP but just a little less torque than my dad's old 1994 Suburban with the 7.4L 454. I know the peak torque occurs in different places between these two engines but I don't have any trouble taking off and accelerating under a load.
So why all the negative about how this engine runs and tows? Yeah it drinks some gas, but most all gas tow vehicles do. It definitely doesn't tow like my Cummins but again, it is a gas powered truck.
I guess if you are looking at it in stock form you might be disappointed, especially since GM uses TM to a crippling effect and doesn't offer good tow gearing anymore. But I know what potential there is in this package. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
  • Prediction. This will soon turn into a "Diesel is better" thread. When I read and watched truck tests, I was sold when I saw how well it compared to other gasoline fueled pickups in its class.
  • I love my 6.0. yea with the 410's it eats gas like no tomorrow but it does the job down nicely. It accually tows our new longer trailer better then out older smaller trailer.
  • With me it was about fuel consumption. I had an 03, even after cold air intake and programmer, I only got 12-13 mpg unloaded. 6-8 mpg with my 8,000 camper. Which meant in Montana, I could barely get between gas stations. The 10 I towing with my diesel is welcomed, plus 18 unloaded on the freeway, even after regens.
  • Maybe the hard feelings are because the GM 6.0L does what the others 6.2L and 6.4L gas engines do?

I had no complaints about my 6.0L and it was paired with a 3.42 axle. Always made me think "if my 3.42 tows this well, do I really want to know how the 6.0L with the 3.73 or 4.10 tows?" I was towing a TT that tipped the scales at over 7000#.

    I think so.

Not many consumers spend the time or money to "tune" a vehicle these days.

They expect it to be right "out of the box".....and rightly so.
  • I have owned three late model (07,09, and 13) Silverado 2500HD's with the 6.0 engine. All used a lot of gasoline, but I went a lot of places. Plenty of power for everything I towed up to 9,000 pounds. Each was better than the last and the six speed made picking a power/cruising gear very easy. I liked the 3,400 pounds of payload when I was playing around with a truck camper.
