Get off I-75 in Calhoun and take Georgia 53 to Rome and get on I-75 South. Stay on I-75 South to LaGrange and get on I-185 South. Go thru Columbus and get on US 280 South. In Richland go straight and get on Georgia 520 South. In Dawson, Georgia 520 will turn into US 82 South to Albany and then to Tifton and I-75 South. It is a great road all the way. Four lane highway and lots of 65mph speed limits, 70 on I-185. You will go thru Carrollton and LaGrange, both are very nice towns with great restored downtowns. West Point Lak,e a Corps of Engineers Lake is in LaGrange. In Columbus there is Fort Benning with the National Infantry Museum and lots of other neat stuff like Army OCS graduations, Army Infantry Recruit Training graduations at the National Infantry Museum. Airborne School jumps and Army Ranger graduation (Rangers in Action) programs, and a great new Exchange and Commissary, if you are retired military. Fort Benning also has a great RV park at Uchee Creek, right next to the Ariborne drop zone. In Albany there is the USMC Logistics Center with an RV park. I would highly recommend this route instead of I-75 thru Atlanta. - jaycocamprsExplorer

What kind of road is 1 going out of Columbia to Rome?
Columbus GA to Rome GA?
GA-1 is US-27. From Columbus GA up to LaGrange GA it's 2 lane. Not bad but take I-185. From LaGrange up it to Rome it's 4 lanes. But there is no by pass for LaGrange and Carrollton, you go right thru town. It's not a bad drive if you have all day. If you’re in a hurry go thru Atlanta. - RetiredbladeExplorer

You never know how the traffic will flow thru Atlanta. sometimes you flow right thru and sometimes you sit for hours. Do not use I-285, go straight thru on I-75, if you go thru Atlanta.
I highly recommend using US 27 thru Western Georgia. It is a 4 lane all the way. Nice road and scenery, lots of 65MPH speed limits. In LaGrange get on I-185 to Columbus. In Columbus get on US 280 and go to Albany. In Albany get on US 82 to Tifton and get on I-75.

Yesterday we drove through Atlanta around 10 am as suggested by many on this forum. Everything went smoothly with no problems. Also, we liked the no truck zone too.
Thanks to everyone for your input, it was VERY helpfull. Love this forum.
SEE, not so bad, as many lead all to believe!

As has been advised, my choice would be directly thru on the downtown connector (I-75 and I-85) from 10Am to 3Pm. Stay in the middle lanes because as suggested, the far right lane will often become and exit only lane and you cannot move over. Just relax and take it at your own pace and let the locals speed their way into misery. Only caveat is the occasional accident that might slow you down, but that could happen on any roadway in the area. Watch your driving and let the passengers enjoy the view of beautiful downtown Atlanta.

So there you go. I have been tempted to use those lanes many times. But the thing that stopped me was both the suspicion that we weren't supposed to and also the fact that the cars using it were going really really fast. I usually drive right at the speed limit and getting in that lane could incite road rage. And in todays world that kind of stuff happens. - JerJan10ExplorerFYI, HOV may be your friend but the HOV police won't be... My email is below:
