Bangor, ME to Burlington, VT: US-2?

We'll be making this trip in late September and am looking for info about US-2 across ME, MH and VT. I've seen several posts on the forum but they were several years old and somewhat discouraging due to comments re road construction.

Does anyone have more recent experience traveling this route? 35' Class A with a toad.

Thanks!
  • Road construction of some sort is nearly inevitable when driving across New England if it's not winter. I'm not aware of any really major construction activities along US2 at present.

US2 is fine for pretty much any vehicle; it's an important route used by trucks, for instance. I've traveled (by car) a reasonable portion of it this summer, from eastern ME through, and don't remember anything at all unexpected or untoward along it.

I would suggest you may want to take I-89 from Montpelier or so, where it and US2 are very closely aligned. The scenery is essentially the same, and the interstate is generally easier going.
  • Hello, I live in Bethlehem NH and use Route 2 to drive over to Burlington VT and Lake George. I pick it up in St J VT. I drove it the other day and it was in pretty good shape, there are always some funky spots that are coming due on our roads! I only remember 1 construction area, very short and no problem, maybe a 3 minute delay. Route 2 in Maine near Bethel going west to Gorham NH was also in good shape. The road out of Gorham is really pretty going towards Jefferson and Lancaster. Lancaster has a nice visitors center and it is a short walk to a good bite to eat, The Polish Princess. Route 2 is a truck route but it isn't 4 lanes by any means, nice route no traffic. Hope this helps!
  • Don't know your destination but if going to NY I love riding the ferry from Grand Isle VT to north of Plattsburgh NY. They run constantly 24 hours and take large commercial vehicles and campers all the time. There are other ferry options such as Charlotte VT to essex NY. Also the Champlain Bridge, visitor center on other side on left, or you can pull into Crown Point Fort ruins on right. Watch your speed coming off bridge!
  • We've done route 2 from Rumford to Bangor in Maine. That section is primarily 2 lane and goes through a fair number of towns where the speed limits drop to 30 or even 25. It's not a bad road, just don't be in a hurry. Watch trip routing carefully as you do have to make some turns in order to stay on 2 (the ones I'm immediately recalling are in Farmington, Norridgewock, and Skowhegan).

In Bangor, 2 runs through downtown so you might consider a route-around depending on your destination/starting point on that end.

Since you're making the trip in late September, keep in mind most parks and campgrounds close Columbus Day, some even close October 1.
