Best route from Cheyenne WY to Coulter Bay (Grand Teton) WY

I'm looking for information on which is the best route from Cheyenne WY to Coulter Bay (Grand Teton) WY. Choices are:
1) I25 north from Cheyenne to Casper then Hwy 26 west to Coulter Bay;
2) I80 west from Cheyenne to Rock Springs then Hwy 191 north to Coulter Bay.

I'm towing a 40 ft long 13 ft high 5th wheel.

Thanks,
Pat
  • Not sure when you are leaving, but there are a lot of scenic & historic sights to see along route 287/26 from Rawlins, WY to the Tetons. Just thought I would add the link to a live web cam that is very close to Togwotee Pass just east of the Tetons.

Just copy & paste the link. By the way, on the bottom photo in the web cam the bottom of the stop sign is at least 5 feet above ground level.
  • We have used all three routes in the past. Our favorites are either of the suggested routes that would take us over the Togwotee pass. Just beautiful scenery! Following pictures were taken May 30, 2014 near the top of the pass.

Brooks Creek Falls and mountain peaks at Falls campground

Snow at the top of the pass

Hazy afternoon view of the Teton range at the rest stop a short way west of the pass
  • I would second, or third, the US 287/US 26 route. I like the fact that portions of US 287 follow the old Oregon-California Trail, the views after Lander are better than US 191, and the route is the most direct from I-80 to Colter Bay. However, if you have never been to Jackson and don't have time to take a side-trip there while at Colter Bay, I would recommend using US 191 just to see the Jackson area.
  • This is the one I look forward to every time. Last September we stopped at the roadside viewpoint for our lunch. Great!!

On 287/26, you cross a pass, not bad, which gives you a really great view first view of the Tetons and Coulter Bay is just up the road (89)

Togwotee Pass--a grand view of the Tetons.
  • ditto to all three routes being good. On 191, there is a gov. campground with water and dump station that sits on the Green River, about 20 miles NW of Pinedale, WY. It makes a good overnight stop and will put you into Coulter Bay around midday.

  • I've been on all three of those routes. Going up to Caspar would get you off the interstate. I'm partial to 191 because of the section that runs along the river before you reach the Jackson area. None of the routes are a problem.
  • That's the route I sued many years ago. If you do use 26 you will have to go over Togwotee Pass at 9600' elevation. Can't comment on the HWY 191 route.

My original reply to this thread disappeared, but it may come back. Not trying to double post.
  • Another choice, (and the one and only that I always take), go on up to Rawlins on I-80 then US 287 - US 26 on to Moran.
