Colorado Springs to Gunnison - how are the passes

In Colorado Springs - headed for Oregon - trying to decide which route to take tomorrow with changing weather this weekend.

How are the roads and passes going over to Gunnison?

Trying to decide whether to head direct west or go north or south for better roads

3500 HD Diesel Truck with 37' Open Range Trailer - has been through Yellowstone and Alaska/Canada before.

Thank
  • That would be Monarch Pass. I'd take CO 115 out of Colorado Springs down to near Canyon City then West on US 50.

I have towed over this route many times: 34' fifth wheel and 2500 Duramax/Allison. I do not consider Monarch difficult at all. In an emergency even towed down to Salida without trailer brakes. No problem. Not that I advise it, but when it happened I had no choice. The point is we made it just fine.

Passing lanes at many convenient places. Just hold your speed going down.
  • Right now the Colorado DOT site COTRIP shows that Monarch Pass is snowy, slushy and icy.

Weather through the weekend is supposed to stay wet down here and snowy in the mountains, so it may be better to head north on I-25 and then head west, further north.
  • Live update for the Pass

  • Since you're travelling tomorrow 5/7/15, just keep an eye on the forecast for the Salida and Gunnison areas, both sides of Monarch Pass. As others have stated, it's not a difficult pass. Tomorrow seems to be a "break" day between storms; forecast calling for changes Friday through Sunday with a chance of SNOW even here at lower elevations on Mother's Day!

The suggestion to take CO 115 south from the Springs to Canon City is a good one, as it will keep you further south and the drive up the Arkansas River Valley is an easy drive to Salida. Just west of there you'll go over Monarch Pass, and then drop down into Gunnison, where it will continue to be down hill to the Grand Junction area.

If the forecast holds, you're less likely to run into the white stuff headed this way, but as always in Colorado, the weather is very changeable, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
  • I just came over Monarch pass today 6 May 2015 about 2 PM.

The road was wet but no snow or ice on the road.

I would wait until mid day to cross the pass so there will be no danger of black ice.

It was about 40 degrees F when I crossed at 2 PM.

No problem with any of US 50 the rest of the way into Montrose.
