Driving Through San Francisco

Hi guys.

Tomorrow we are heading into the San Francisco Bay area from the north. We want to stay at a RV park just south of San Francisco. The route the GPS puts us on has us go through the city, across the Golden Gate bridge.

I'm worried about pulling the trailer across that bridge. Has anyone done it? Thoughts? Alternate routes or suggestions?

Our trailer is 36' long.
  • So we took the Golden Gate. Crossing it and driving through San Francisco were fine. Thanks for the advice everyone !

The only real challenge was the toll gate. Damn that was tight!
  • While taking an RV over the Golden Gate Bridge sounds great, the traffic on the other side is anything but that. And its going to be an expensive experience. You are charged by the axle and end up paying the same fees as a 16 wheeler. You don't see MANY of them crossing the bridge these days.
Make sure you transit after 9am and before 3 pm as the traffic is less.
    Good Luck
    Bill
  • Be in the right curb lane on the bridge. Be sure to know your route after getting off the bridge to the campground as the surface streets can be very busy and lots of traffic. Otherwise.....go for it.
  • google sf resort rv park in pacifica. right on the ocean. stay away from rate 101.
  • I live in the SF Bay Area. Getting across the Bridge is no problem. Driving through the city is. There are no freeways that go through the city and it will be tight. Very tight.

An alternate route that will take you to the east of the city is to take the 580 from the 101 across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge over to the 80 freeway and then south through Oakland on the 780.

From the 780 you can cross back over the the west on the San Mateo Bridge and then to the 101 or continue south on 780 to San Jose.
  • Bridge is easy. City is tight and full of cars. Go slow and pay attention to the route and lane to be in and you be fine. Drove through two years ago, no issues.

If you want to stop and shop or eat you can forgetaboutit. Ride the BART into the city if you want to explore.
  • Pulled a 36ft TT across GGB last summer - NO PROBLEM.
In case you don't know about it, they have an automated tol system now.
A camera takes a picture of your license plate and they mail you the bill to your home address. If not paid in 30 days, a large fine is added to it.
There are locations where you can pay in person if you choose.
Also you can set up an account a have the tol charged to your credit card.
Google golden gate bridge tol for a web site for details.
  • When exiting the bridge heading into san Francisco make sure to keep to the left. Our GPS said "slide right" and we spent 45 min.of control borrow navigating the streets and hills with a 30ft 5th wheel in tow.
