Mass Pike Info

I will be leaving Gloucester, MA in a few weeks headed to western PA. I am tired of my old route thru CT and NY so for a change we will take the Mass Pike all the way across the state to NY. My question is....at the Mass Pike Toll Booths in South Boston (I-95/I-90), do I pick up a toll ticket from a person or a ticket machine? I hate the ticket machines because they are so hard to reach from my MH window. Thanks for any info!
  • I've never thought I-88 an especially bad road. I just came north on it a few weeks ago (in my motorhome), and aside from a couple of miles near Binghamton that were a bit rough and one slow vehicle lane going up a hill that was very rough I didn't see anything at all that I thought warranted complaint, much less avoidance at all costs.

Maybe I've lived in the northeast too long and become desensitized to imperfect road conditions....hmmm....
  • If you go I88 to Binghamton just do like all the big trucks and cars do stay in the left lane when no one is behind you. I've been on worse roads. About 150 miles and it will all be in the rearview mirror. Safe travels !!
  • Definitly get an EZPass but I-88 in NY is getting to be a rough road. I was on it this week with a 1 ton truck and trailer and if I never see that road again....
  • Do not pick up the Pike in Boston, go down 128 and pick it up in Weston. Propane is not allowed in the Boston tunnels.
  • Thanks for your help folks. Brooks379, that is the exact route I intend to take, just didn't mention it because I was more curious about entering the turnpike near Boston. Thanks again!
  • Either , or.... They have both. It is going to cost a small fortune to travel I 90 all the way across plus you will have toll booths on the west side of Buffalo and the East side too that you have to stop at. I always take I 90 to Schenectady ,NY I 88 to Binghamton, NY then pick up I 86 across the southern tier of NY into western PA. Not half as much traffic and no Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo traffic to deal with. If you travel that part of the country and like toll roads get your self an ...Easy Pass !!
  • I get no kickback from FastPass/Fastlane/Easypass or whatever they call themselves but I highly recommend you get a transponder if time permits. It will avoid long lines at the tolls, not having to stop and manually pay cash. We track charges online also. Works most everywhere from here to the Florida border. PA uses it also.
  • I believe all plazas have at least one manned lane. At night, sometimes just one person working the plaza and switches from paying to handing out a ticket. But, you will see the boothless tolling system is being put in all down the pike. They already screw up with me. Somehow, without my trailer, my truck is fine. I add my trailer, and the Mass Pike thinks I get duallies.
