- JTExplorer"Since we come from warm dry calm polluted Southern California"
---
I'm in warm, dry, calm (usually) polluted Northern California; a little beach wind is do-able!
I will check out the road from Humboldt Redwoods SP on Google maps; it just looked like going down from Ferndale might be shorter. My class C is a widebody, but I've driven quite a few goat tracks. Thanks for the tips. - profdant139Explorer IIThe road from Humboldt State Redwoods to Mattole might be a little easier than the one from Ferndale -- I did it with a small trailer. Slowly and carefully. The campground is wonderful -- very isolated. Bring warm clothes. Since we come from warm dry calm polluted Southern California, we found Mattole to be terrific -- lots of ocean wind, cold air, moist air, clean air. If you like to breathe, it is a great place. If you like to hang out on a warm beach, it is not.
Also bring sandals for walking on the beach. Hiking boots get full of sand. Don't ask me how I know this. - msmith1199Explorer IIThe Google street view car has been down it. Looks like the above description is accurate. I've never been on that road (or on that part of the coast at all) but it is now on my to-do list after looking at it on Google.
- Here's the National Weather Service monthly climatological summary for Eureka (the closest I could find so far) for September, 2013. It includes wind data.

- I drove that road in 2007 and don't suppose it has changed much. Narrow and a bit bumpy but not too bad. Spectacular scenery.
It was extremely windy in the campground and along the beach. Most vehicles were those of backpackers, near restrooms in the photos, or picknickers in the campground. I think I was the only person who spent the night at the camp. Beautiful place, great beachcombing, and I'd go there again in a heartbeat.
Campground photos: - KCFDCaptExplorerThe road is narrow, steep and desolate. I have been down it in the pickup, the SUV and on the Harley. Plan on going very slow in the lowest gear you can find. It is rough in places too.
