Memphis TN to Clarksville TN

I don't know the two cities you first mention, but I do know if you go all the way to Nashville you will be going farther east than expected. You would then have to back track about 6o miles or so.

I40 out of Memphis, to about Brownsville,(west of Jackson. US 79 to Clarksville. Good road, will be mostly two lane, but a lot less traffic, and the shortest route. Mostly flat land. Over toward Dickson and US13, you will be in the hills, lot of up and down and twisty two lane. We are in Lexington, and run 79 from McKinzie east a lot. Quite a bit of new four lane that way also. Get a NEW Tennessee map, Google, Garmin, and all the rest are way behind actual roads and bypasses in that area. Been several years since we went to Clarksville, but I don't remember any problems.

Just give yourself plenty of time, and don't get in too big of a hurry. Watch the speed limits Carefully!

I40 is in good comedition all across Tennessee (mostly), but in one of the most heavily travelled interstates, and carries a majority of the east-west truck traffic. I 24 is not as bad, and the is now a bypass around downtown from I40 up to I24. And it would be a lot out of the way. We are just 30' with a toad, but avoid that route whenever possible. Having lived in Middle and West Tennessee for over 2/3 of our life, I would go some other route.

What Johno02 said. Hwy 79 through Paris and Dover is much improved, and 65 mph in some sections. Good views as well with nothing limiting your 5th wheel.

Pick up 79 over around Brownsville, to avoid Jackson also, but watch up around Milan, cause a lot of the Jackson drivers(?) hang around up that way too.

I wasn't aware of hills and twisty roads for the routes I was considering. Looking at the maps I like that Hy79 route; you've convinced me that's the way to go. Thank you so much.

Another good thing to play with if you have a good Internet connection is Google Earth. I use it a lot to look at campgrounds to get an idea of what we might be getting into. It is also a good way to take a look at roads and highways. If you use the "street view", you can actually take a look and see what it will look like out your windshield. It has save me more than once when going into unknown areas.

We took 79 to Clarksville just last May was a nice tow good road with no problems.

I would recommend it we would go that way again.

If you need a place to stay on the way check out Bumpus Mills COE near land between the lakes. It is not to far out of Dover.

FWIW, the trip is only a couple hundred miles, so you may not need a place to stay, but if you have the chance, I second the suggestion for a stay at Land Between The Lakes NRA. It is a total gem--over 170,000 acres of federal land dedicated to just about every kind of outdoor recreation you can imagine. We've stayed at both the Piney (south end) and Hillman Ferry (north end) campgrounds, and been through the area numerous times when my sons were migrating in and out of Fort Campbell regularly. We were there just a few months ago and I can hardly wait to go back.
