  • My wife grew up in a house on US31 just south of South Bend. 5 decades ago the state took the front yard to make the highway 4 lanes. Then they put in the bypass around the SW side of town, and finally extended it north to Michigan, and east past Elkhart. About 3 years ago they bought the house to make way for the freeway version of US31. Now Google Maps is showing lots of empty lots in that neighborhood.
  • Open for 6 hours and the police are already writing tickets on it.
  • Considering that its snowing outside right now, I'd like to be in the other Kokomo. The Island in the Bahamas that the Beach Boys sang about.
  • Bypasses do not bypass for very long. The current congested route 31 through Kokomo used to be the bypass, 50 years ago. The most congested road in my city is the US-75 bypass built in the 1960s, almost no traffic on what used to be the main route through town, though parts were kept as a state highway.

Travel US-24 from Logansport to Fort Wayne on the new (1990s) alignment bypassing every town to see how commercial activity gets moved out to shopping centers on the bypass, as developers subdivide and build along the bypass.

It's happening on US-169 bypass alignments barely five years old.

Tatest - The State is using part of the $3.75 billion they received from the lease of the Indiana Toll Road to make US 31 from South Bend to Indianapolis interstate grade. So i don't think that will happen to the new by-pass, at least I hope not.
