Raton to Midland

looking for a good route from Raton, NM to Midland,TX, without going out of the way on I-25. Is there a shorter way that you would suggest?
  • On US 385 in Littlefield Texas the Waylon Jennings RV park is free. 50 amp and 30 amp with water and a dump station. Find Rodriguez's and eat some fine Tex Mex.
  • We took this route from Raton Pass to Vega, TX 7 months ago pulling a TT. There are a few active towns that are not bad and several abandoned towns. The road isn't interstate but they are straight and mostly thru wide-open country with very little traffic. If you will need fuel on this route, plan ahead - some of the towns on the map used to be there but no more.
  • Pappaone, there are a few small towns. The roads themselves will slow you down- that's the idea of taking back roads-stop and smell the roses. IMO, if you're in a hurry stay on the Interstates. Our normal journey takes us thru the small towns and we actually like to STOP and visit them, you'll be surprised at the treasures lurking in many of these places....Dennis
  • This looks like a good route to me and I have been over the Raton--Amarillo portion so many times I know the scenery by heart.

I haven't been south of where US 385 crosses I-40 as I am always headed East from there, but there are not many small towns in that part of West Texas.

Clayton, Texline, Dalhart, are about the only towns along the Raton to Vega portion of the route.

You will pass by the Cal Farley Boys' Ranch on 385. We stayed there for their annual Youth Rodeo in their very adequate RV campground.
  • Executive when you took 64/87/385 down to Midland did you encounter a lot of small towns especially on 385 that might slow a person down?
  • Thank you for the helpful information , now we can hope the weather cooperates

  • While we didn't stay in Raton, but we took 64/87/385 down to Midland. There's a nice campground in Vega, about half way just as you approach I-40. Good for an overnight especially if you want to tour Amarillo which is about a half hour away. All good roads. There's two things to see if you have the time. One is the Capulin Volcano site. It's a National Monument and pretty cool and if you want to go a bit out of your way, stop by Lake Meredith Recreation Area in Texas. Lots of places to stay around the lake. Water only, but camping is Free! Nice lake and should be full now....Dennis
  • We have gone from Raton to Dalhart, Amarillo, Lubbock and on to Midland. They are good roads all the way. This is the route Google Maps showed as first choice.
