Reno to Yellowstone to Mt. Rushmore

I'm looking for advice on where to stay with my 5th wheel...I will be traveling from Reno to Salt Lake City then heading north through Logan and north from there...I plan on an overnight around Jackson Wy to see the tourist site, but really do not know where to stay.

Next is entering Yellowstone park itself...can it be entered from Jackson area and should I allow more than one day there? If more than one day, where to stay?

Next would be a trip east to Mt Rushmore...again I'm not familiar with the roads or places to stay.

Obviously I'm asking for a lot of info, but I know a lot of folks on this forum have already been over these routes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Larry
  • I would recommend Colter Bay RV Park in the Tetons (close to Jackson) then head north to Yellowstone through the south entrance. We stayed at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone, a parking lot but with full hook-ups and reservation capability. Just out of Fishing Bridge is the Hayden Valley where we saw most of our animal sightings. Like others, I can't imagine spending just one day in Yellowstone. East out of Fishing Bridge to resume your trip.
  • I saved this post
if chemo did the job wewill try to head out this summer
    thanks
  • Custer State Park was our base to visit Mt Rushmore. Turned out it was one of our very favorite stops ANYWHERE in the US. Big surprise and our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Agree with Big Game Lodge campground, but if you can't get in there, consider Grace Coolidge - here's my blog review: Custer State Park Campground, South Dakota

I also have a one day in Yellowstone blog post because we accidentally had one day in Yellowstone - not what I'd recommend but it worked for us late in September ... Yellowstone in One Day

There are other posts on the website if you want to look, go to Latest News and scroll down the page. 3 Amazing Scenic Drives in South Dakota are all drives within Custer State Park - one leads to Mt Rushmore.
  • stay overnight in Gros Ventre campground in Grand Teton park, about 7 miles north and east of Jackson. Water and dump station.

you will need a minimum of two FULL days at yellowstone just to see the basics.
stay at Bridge Bay campground, water and dump, or Fishing Bridge, with full hookups. Get reservations NOW and don't be surprised if you have to jockey your timing a bit.

exit yellowstone and head for Cody. Do yourself a big favor and stay a couple days in Cody. One for the Buffalo Bill Museum of the West, and the other for a day trip on Chief Joseph scenic byway, then over Beartooth pass and down to Red Lodge, MT then south back to Cody. Take a picnic lunch and have coffee and ice cream up at the Top of the World tourist stop. Do not pull your rig for this.
From Cody, go southeast down to highway 16 and then east across the mountains to Buffalo WY and I 90. Go east and take 16 at Moorcroft then east all the way to Custer, SD. There are several rv parks in the area...or try to get a reservation at Custer State Park... Game Lodge campground is my choice.
Take the scenic road 16A to get to Rushmore.
  • What time of year will you be traveling? A day for Yellowstone seems a little short -- we spent two weeks there in the fall a few years ago.
  • Good Sam has a Trip Planner. You can also scope out RV parks in cities you might be staying. I use it all the time.

As far as routes I like to use Google Maps and let it choose the initial route and then I verify if it is RV friendly or not. Hint - Interstates will get you where you need to go with the least fuss. Next are US Routes. They won't be Interstates but they will be good roads. You might want to pick up a Motor Carrier Atlas, what the truckers use.
