Route 114 to Alma New Brunswick - Condition?

Researching 2014 trip to Fundy NP.

Read on Trip Advisor that the road for the TCH to Alma is very rough.

Poster said to avoid if trailering or in Motorhome.

Anyone have comments?
  • My info is dated, as we went up to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia back in 2008. We drove quite a bit of the secondary roads including route 111 from St. John to St. Martin and back to the TCH at Sussex then route 114 to Fundy NP and on to Moncton. My recollection is that the secondary roads weren't good, but not altogether horrible. Some sections in NS were much worse than what we experienced in NB, bad enough that driving as fast as the speed limit was impossible due to bumps or frost heaves.

I don't recall route 114 being especially bad. The pictures below are of route 114 on the way from the TCH to Fundy.

As an aside, Fundy NP was good, but IMO the best place to experience the Fundy tides was Hopewell Rocks.

  • We were there last august. Fresh tar and gravel cost me a windshield. The road is twisty and up and down, but we had no problems.
Alma is beautiful. It was scallop season when we were there, and you could watch them shuck them on the boats from your dining table.
  • Thank you both for responding. And thanks CloudDriver for the pictures. from your descriptions, roads are probably not much worse that here in connecticut. I guess you didn't see trailers and motor homes with broken axles and trails of parts as warned by the poster on Trip Advisor.
Planning on doing Maine coast from Freeport to Lubec, Campobello Island, Saint john and the Fundy National Park. Lots to do in2 weeks. Might need more!

  • If you can get to St.Andrews the campground is right on the ocean and a 5 min walk to town. It is a beautiful old town with lots to see and do. We took 3 weeks from Ontario and would have liked another 3. Northern Maine is spectacular.
And no axles or parts seen anywhere.
  • While in the area you should visit St Martins and also the Fundy Trail there. The trail is amazing.
Absolutely worth it. It's a linear provincial park.

  • If you will be taking route 1 from Freeport up the coast to Lubec, I'll add few items that may be of interest. Camden Hills State Park is just a couple of miles past Camden. We have over nighted there several times in the past. The view of Camden Harbor and Penobsot Bay is spectacular from the top of Mt. Battie (use the toad to go up). We had great seafood in Camden overlooking the boats in the harbor.

Just before crossing the river at Bucksport is Fort Knox.

X2 on the Fundy Trail Parkway near St Martins. There are also several small sea caves in St Martins, as well as some covered bridges you can drive through. We stayed several days at Century Farm Campground in St Martins.
  • Thanks CloudDriver.

Your suggestions have been researched and are added to the list.

You will see me posting many more pointed questions on this forum as my research continues. There is no better place to get "been there, dome that" feedback.
  • WE took 114 from the west to Fundy Headquarters Capground in August, then followed it along the coast toward Moncton in a 39' pusher with toad. Gravel road on the way in cost me two chips in the windshield, but no major problems. If I remember correctly, the road was gravel only for a short portion coming in from the west off Hwy 1.
Beautiful area, beautiful park, and one of the most pleasant and helpful young ladies I've ever met who met us at the campground and got us checked in.
