RT 2 Montana

Traveling across Montana in late August and need some imput on campgrounds across the state. Will be on rt.2 Thanks.
  • We stopped in Glasgow Mt, at a little motel/overnight campground that was very nice and reasonable. Cottonwood Inn.
  • In eastern ND there is a county campground around Larimore. Around Devils Lake are some state parks. Fort Peck dam has several COE campgrounds. Havre, MT has a RV Park on the east side of town nest to the train tracks plus on in the fairgrounds on the west side. Fresno Dam/Lake west off hiway 2 has a campground.

Near the west entrance to Glacier Park has a bunch of full service campgrounds. We've always stayed at the Apgar campground inside the west entrance. They have water faucets and dump station along with restrooms in each loop.
  • A great way to go but do pay attention to the ascending and descending speed limits. Example- 65-55-45-35-25, just watch your speed as quite a bit of US 2 is on Indian Reservations.
  • A few years ago we stopped at a town-operated RV park in Chinook MT. 15 or so miles south of Chinook is the Bear Paw battlefield National Historic site - well worth a visit to this site of Chief Joseph's surrender after his long flight from Idaho (See Chief Joseph War) in about 1870. Nice interpretations etc) We were lucky enough to be on site to witness the end of the Nez Perce ride/commemoration - about 200, in full regalia and decorated horses and great memorial service!!
  • There may be some camping available in Teddy Roosevelt NP, not sure though due to the activity in nearby Bakken Oil Field. Check wth the Park Service folks as to availability. Think there is a CG at Fort Union which is on the MT/ND border at the confluence of the Yellowstone River with the Missouri. Just a few miles away from US 2 if I remember correctly. There may be a CG near Mandan ND, but not sure. However the Mandan area is definitely worth a visit to experience the Lewis & Clark expedition of over 200 years ago.
  • I'd suggest going to visitmt.com and also rvparkreviews.com. They give a pretty good clue on what's available. Also, PassportAmerica.com has half a dozen campgrounds across the state. Obviously, there are a lot of choices near Glacier National Park. Also, lot of national forest campgrounds in western Montana. If you need some suggestions in western MT, send me a PM with some idea of the type of camping you prefer and activities you enjoy. Western MT and the Panhandle of ID have lots of choices. Have fun planning.
  • Time your travel so that you don't need an over-night between western North Dakota and eastern Montana,ie the Bakken Oil field area. All the campgrounds in that region are 110% full, all the time. That is roughly Wiliston N.D. to Sidney MT
  • We traveled 2 from Minot to Glacier about 3-4 years ago. We stayed in Malta at the Edgewater Motel and RV park. It was okay for one night. Yes, the train track is very close and elevated but don't remember any noise problem that night. I don't think you have many choices in eastern Montana.
  • US 2 is a great way to travel to Glacier NP and we've done it all the way from Duluth. I'm trying to remember campgrounds and am not coming up with too much. There is a very nice USACE one at Fort Peck; big and not full with elec. Then there are a few private ones and possibly we stayed at a fairground campground somewhere along 2 which was OK. So, yes there are some but I would take a directory and plan ahead a little.
