Savannah GA, Tybee Island

Looking to RV to Tybee Island next week. 2 routes suggested by maps from Greenville, SC runs me through Savannah. Any issues going thru Savannah?
  • Aaaa ... WHY would ANYONE want to visit a 'Bug Farm' like this?
  • There are a couple of routes to take through Savannah one of which does not allow trucks & RVs. Sorry I can't remember the street names. I followed my GPS and got on the wrong route. Our favorite RV park is Rivers End. County owned and full hookups. Located where the large rive dumps into the ocean. North on the beach and only a few blocks away to it and the light house. Nice area to bike. And the ocean breeze helps with the bugs.

Yeah buddy!! Being from WI we never experienced sand flies or "no seems" before, we spent 6 days in the Savannah area. What a learning experience THAT was! Wow, I was scratching for a week or so after that visit! Next time I'll learn to wear long sleeves and long pants for sure. That was terrible! :E

Savannah was beautiful, we'll probably visit again we'll just be more careful when we're near the beach areas.

  • Just our opinion, but we've been to Tybee Island (not camping), and found it somewhat overrated. As we recall, there is very limited public beach access.

OTOH, Savannah is a great place to visit, and we enjoyed staying at both Skidaway SP in Savannah, and Ft. McAllister SP just down the the road in Richmond Hill.
  • Agree with Chrisatthebeach. We've been to Savannah and to Tybee numerous times and going via U S 17 to Bay St. works well with our 32'Class A and toad. Have a good time!
  • You will not have any issues. If you get off in SC at exit 5 you can come in via US17 and cross the Talmadge bridge, take the first exit and follow the signs or your GPS to Tybee. Bay street through town is not a problem, big trucks make the route all the time. The end of Bay street to President street is currently closed with construction but the detour is clearly marked and plenty of room for you.
I drove out there last week to check on my aunt's beach house that is right across the street from the campground. Plenty of class a motorhomes and trailers taking the same route.
  • Those aren't mosquitoes - around here they're called "sand fleas." They are very small, can make it through many screens, and hurt like heck when they're chewing on you. We were out at Tybee yesterday and didn't have problems with them there (although we do have them at Hunter Army Airfield on the southern end of Savanna at this time). The 24th Infantry Division at FT Stewart discovered that Avon Skin-So-Soft was the only thing that would keep them away. Imagine a heavy mechanized battalion going to the field smelling like a French bordello...

As mentioned, getting an RV out to Tybee is no problem - you can get from the interstates to HWY 80 which will take you all the way out to the island. There are a few congested areas on 80 with stoplights, though, and it can be a bit slow during rush hour. This coming weekend, there are supposed to be thousands of teenagers converging on Tybee for some sort of big to-do. Also, "Baywatch" is filming there right now and parts of the beach and pier are closed for a few weeks.

  • What does "haha" have to do with any of this??

Going through Savannah to Tybee is no problem unless you hit it at rush hour on Friday.

I don't know how the real small mosquitoes are at Tybee Island but just up the road at Yonges Island, SC they were everywhere... They were so small they would come right thru the screens haha... Was a horrible experience when was there for a week...

Was talking with my friend that lived in that area of SC and he tells me they had to put on protective head gear to go get vegetables from their garden haha...

He said if you was right on the beach to the Atlantic waters they are not so bad and the incoming Ocean breeze takes care of them...

Next time I go there I will most definitely have a 20-inch BOX fan sitting in front of me all the time haha...
